I started working John's Seventy-Six this evening. It is a lovely 549, a slightly bent bulldog. John bought it new, so it was a treat to finish this one for him. I'm almost done. The bowl is soaking now with some alcohol and sea salt. I'm not sure what John was smoking in it, but it was pretty gunky so we decided to do the bowl soak. The rim build-up came off, revealing some more beautiful Seventy-Six model grain.
The stem was pretty oxidized and took some scrubbing. The rondell fell off at some point in the past, which is unfortunate. But, it left an embossed GBD logo underneath that I was able to work around. I had heard the stem was carved out by machine for these brass rondells, but now I believe they were just hot pressed in. So, while the rondell is gone, it still has some identity. I passed on a beat-up GBD with a brass rondell a few weeks ago that went for $10. The rondell would have been worth it and I won't make that mistake again.
I have to clean the shank and probably touch up the stem (oxidation always hides by garage light, but is exposed in sunlight.). She'll be ready to ship back to John on Saturday.
I have to add that John included some tobacco in the box. Well, not just any tobacco, but some extinct and much admired "Crown Achievement". I've jarred that for a special occasion and pipe. Thanks so much!
Here's some shots of Johns Seventy-Six:

I'll definitely take a picture with my two Seventy-Six's and Johns. There's no telling when three will be in the same room together again.

Nice refurb job. I like GBD's a lot. I have a GBD poker and it's a really good smoker.

All I can say is, "WOW!" Thanks you so much for the effort and the results, Al. Now I'm tempted to round up all of my GBD's and give them a full inspection. Maybe a group picture is in order.

Very nice work Al - came out beautifully. May I ask what you used for "plastic polish" on the stem?

Thanks. Seeing your work, it's amazing how nice an estate can be restored - makes me want to tackle one!

You do amazing work Al, I know where I am sending my next refurbish job. Glad your GBD is what you hoped for. 37 bucks for a great old pipe is a hell of a deal.

That is some nice work on the restos. I just found a Seventy Six shape 508 at a flea market for $22.50 and had to make it happen. I hope my resto ends up looking as good. Pics to come.

Neat Stig, the Seventy-Six wood seems to be fantastic. My bulldog has turned into one of my top GBD smokers, and they all smoke very well. I thought that I wasn't a straight pipe guy, but this one smokes so well it is a favorite. I'll look forward to your pictures and welcome to the Seventy-Six Club!

Real nice Al. I'm sitting on 3 GBD's that I won recently waiting for resto. So far I just reamed them all ready to wire brush the stems.........
