I started working John's Seventy-Six this evening. It is a lovely 549, a slightly bent bulldog. John bought it new, so it was a treat to finish this one for him. I'm almost done. The bowl is soaking now with some alcohol and sea salt. I'm not sure what John was smoking in it, but it was pretty gunky so we decided to do the bowl soak. The rim build-up came off, revealing some more beautiful Seventy-Six model grain.
The stem was pretty oxidized and took some scrubbing. The rondell fell off at some point in the past, which is unfortunate. But, it left an embossed GBD logo underneath that I was able to work around. I had heard the stem was carved out by machine for these brass rondells, but now I believe they were just hot pressed in. So, while the rondell is gone, it still has some identity. I passed on a beat-up GBD with a brass rondell a few weeks ago that went for $10. The rondell would have been worth it and I won't make that mistake again.
I have to clean the shank and probably touch up the stem (oxidation always hides by garage light, but is exposed in sunlight.). She'll be ready to ship back to John on Saturday.
I have to add that John included some tobacco in the box. Well, not just any tobacco, but some extinct and much admired "Crown Achievement". I've jarred that for a special occasion and pipe. Thanks so much!

I'll definitely take a picture with my two Seventy-Six's and Johns. There's no telling when three will be in the same room together again.
