Just the way it doesn't meet up with the shank, and you can see bare natural briar in the crack, seems unfinished to me.

He seems to be making a lot of pipes in that style recently. Check out his "Pipes for Sale" page. You'll see a few like that.

To my eyes also sounds like a replacement stem for the reason that marmal4de said.Otherwise whould appear as unfinished

I've seen several of todays carvers use that stem shank treatment on a pipe.

Fine looking pipe and I like the way he bends a stem ever so slightly.
