I use the 3 step method as well. If it is ever too lose after the charring light, I can always tamp it down more firmly and continue on. I always check the draw before lighting because a bowl that is too tightly packed will smoke incredibly poorly.

Lots of good info here, but your smoking speed definitely does have something to do with your ability to enjoy it

Three step method... All I use :) May be a novice method, but it works so I could care less.

Definitely trying the Harry Method tonight! I used to use the 3 step now

I just gravity fill very lightly tamp with my finger or tap the bowl on my hand to settle the tobacco and then get se little bits to put on top. After smoking for awhile you begin to realize when you need to tamp while smoking so it's best to start with a loose pack to begin with. Like others said practice until it becomes second nature and also realize every bowl will be slightly different in the way it smokes, even with the same pipe and tobacco.
