I've watched the vids that show the different methods for packing your bowl. Being a Noob, I was wondering if any method was more "rookie" friendly? I'm always having to re light my pipe even though i'm using the methods that are prescribed....

i tell my friends to pinch pack draw then stuff it down then draw again. do this until the bowl is full. takes a bit but it will smoke well and you will learn fast how to pack.

hmmm...not really a packing tip but...
I ususlly try to pack slightly on the loose side. It is much easier to tamp to pack it better when it's burning. Thats really healped me alot.
I normally do the 3 step gravity feed. But i try not to pack it too tight. I find that when looser, the ambers will catch other pieces of tobacco easier, but once it get burned, you'll need to tamp at a good pressure.
Thats just what works for me so far, and i'm still a noob

Do the Harry Roll, put a small amount in your hand, about a little over what you think your bowl can hold, turn pipe upside down, come down on tobbaco, rolling pipe around and around, tobbaco will roll up in pipe, i know, trust me, doesn"t take long, turn pipe right side up, tamp it a little, not too hard and you will have a good smoke, OH you have to have a straight pipe, if bent take stem off to roll. The old cajun

I put tobacco in my hand, turn the bowl upside down, and rub it over the tobacco in a circular motion. I then flip the bowl tightened up push the tobacco down just below the rum of my pipe using my thumb and dump whatever is left in my hand back in the tin. I can never seem to get it right with the three step packing technique it always ends up with too tight a draw for me but the "Harry method" I described works everytime with me unless it's flake tobacco or Larry's Blend but the flake is a whole different ball game that I have yet to get get my hands on.

EDIT: The Old Cajun was too fast for me!

Packing a tad on the loose side will aid in just about all aspects of your smoking experience.

My recommendation is to pack loosely, tamp lightly after the Char Light, let it rest for a couple of minutes, then apply the True Light. Tamp often but always with just the weight of the tamper. (a twisting motion will smooth the ash and aid in keeping the ember small but steady.

With some practice you'll develop your own or preferred method of packing.

Like us Codgers.... stuff & puff.

Sometimes the newbie culprit to many relights is tamping. Once every so often, usually every five to ten minutes or so, the ash needs a light tamping to keep the ember close to the unlit tobacco. Just let gravity lightly press the ash down and puff on it while you do it.
The other suggestion is to check the draw after you load the pipe, if you don't already do that. That way you know you've packed it well.

Each pipe I have I pack a little differently. Each has its own personality yet I do not over think it. You will figure it out. If you pack to lightly, you can tamp it down a bit. Playing around with it is half the fun. Enjoy the journey, take your time.

Being a noob not too long ago myself, I think the 3 step method is best for newbies. The first drop a pinch in and tamp with finger with the pressure of a baby. Second, a pinch and tamp with finger with the pressure of the mother and lastly, a pinch and tamp with your finger with the pressure like Daddy.
1. pinch and barely tamp

2. pinch and somewhat tamp

3. pinch and tamp firmly

You know there's a lot of methods, and tried and true techniques ...
I use a gravity fill technique.
But really, the only thing you're trying to do, is get an even density of tobacco without it being packed so tight that you can't draw through it easily.
Even with a fully packed unlit pipe, you should be able to draw air through it with no more difficulty than you drink soda from a straw.

Here is the Harry Method they are talking about. It works best with a billiard and ribbon/shag cut.

Something that hasn't been said, relights are perfectly OK when smoking. In all my bowls, I've only had 3 that burned the entire time without any relights after the initial light. So don't worry about them. Obviously, packing is #1 here, but relights a re just the nature of the hobby.

+1 Jason.

I don't often have to relight but I tend to smoke smaller bowls, but when I do I don't even think twice about it. All I know is the tobacco has to be burning to smoke it so if I have to relight, so be it. My suggestion is to find a method or two that work for you through trial, error, and success. Relax and good smoke will follow.

Just wanted to say "Thank You" to everyone, the knowledge provided has been very useful. As it turns out, wet tobacco seems to be culprit. I decided to air out some of my favorite blend for about 24hrs, which helped a great deal. I was also packing too tightly, which resulted in constant re lights etc. Thanks again, Gentlemen.

I do the "put some in there and tamp, light and smoke" method, sometimes it's a hard draw as I don't check it, never really thought about checking, but from now on I will.
See, you learn things everyday!! :puffy:

i have never seen that "Harry Roll" thats a pretty cool way to pack a pipe.

It's my favorite way to load loose cut (non flake) blends.
I also load using several pinches successively tamping with increasingly more pressure. Kinda like a six or seven step process.
