Same tobacco every time or have you tried different blends in this pipe?
I've smoked two different English blends through it so far, both stokkebye variations. I had considered the fact that maybe a different blend might bear different results. I smoke English blends and my tobacco supply consists entirely of English blends at the moment. I had wondered if a different kind of blend might fare better in this pipe.

Which series was it? Does it have a 9mm filter (you mentioned a filter)? Is it a System pipe?
As the smoke is directed towards the mouth roof, the capacity to taste is being reduced, simply because the tongue is the organ that does the tasting.
So, the thing with the P-Lip is that it takes a certain number of pipefuls before a tobacco 'blueprint' starts being embedded into the bowl. This, and your adapting to the P-Lip will progressively increase your capacity to taste the tobacco more. Letting the smoke sit in your mouth before exhaling it also helps and it will reach the tongue.
It took me a while to start being used to that kind of stem. The P-Lip is an acquired taste that takes time and patience.

To me the p lip sends the smoke up to the roof of my mouth whereas a normal pipe sends it back across the tongue, so it’s possible you have a different range of taste receptors in these different areas. Because of this I try to roll the smoke, letting it tumble down from the roof before exhaling. Retrohaling will also get you some extra flavor. As others have said break it in more, maybe with an inexpensive burley/bright codger blend so that way even if you can’t taste it you’re not wasting premium leaf.

I like the p-lip. But, as others have mentioned, I HATE that coating! My first smoke with a Peterson System was a disaster. After I wiped all the gunk out of it, it was fine.

Hi,

I've recently acquired a Peterson B10 with a p-lip. It's the first p-lip I've ever had and I decided to get it because it was my understanding that it's design is meant to reduce or eliminate tongue bite.

It's a beautiful pipe and it seems to smoke really well and it does indeed seem to eliminate the bite. However there is an issue that I don't quite understand. I can't taste the tobacco at all. I mean there is literally no flavor whatsoever. I can't even smell the tobacco. At first I thought it was the filter, as I don't use filters in my other pipes. But smoking it again without the filter was no different. No taste or smell at all. I smoke primarily English blends and in all my other pipes the flavors are very prominent. I've never encountered this issue before.

I'm guessing that this has something to do with p-lip and how the smoke is directed. Has anyone else ever experienced this? If so, what do you do about it?

I appreciate any thoughts.

No taste or smell? Are you sure you don’t have Covid?

I'm a far thing from an expert, but I have never heard of this before. As others have stated, I have a hard time seeing this as a p-lip issue, as countless Peterson smokers would be spoken out of it has been. Mind you, I can't think of anything else that would mute the flavors entitling...

I'm just guessing, but I surmise that a majority of pipe smokers prefer a fishtail bit, and a large minority wouldn't want any P-lip bits at all. I like my one P-lip pipe as a change of pace, but I wouldn't get another. Few brands elect to include a version of the P-lip; this may be because of patents, but non-Peterson P-lips have been done before. Some really like them, but I'd guess most don't.

That may well be the case. I wonder, though, how much of that comes from fishtail bits being more popular, so people starting out become accustomed to it over the p-lip? My first pipe was a tiny Well Bent with a p-lip of sorts, and I actually prefer them over the fishtail.

Mind you, maybe fishtail bits are more popular because more people prefer them. Kinda like a chicken or egg scenerio

it's funny when I tried mine. I like it better but not enough to care one way or the other. I'd have to be really split between two pipes for it be the deciding factor. But my first thought after smoking it was if this was the normal one people would have issues with fishtails.

Most of my Peterson have the P-Lip. I really like it a lot.

Two have fishtails. The 999 "short" has a perfectly sized one and it's great. My Lestrade has a fishtail that is an absolute beast, lol, it is wide! It's proportional to the big bowled pipe and it's fine, but always takes me by surprise.

I am a Peterson addict. I really enjoy the system pipes. If memory serves the B10 is not a system shape. That said I have many in the classic range with pLips and I have not sensed what you describe. I prefer the pLips. I just smoke gently and let the flavor emerge as the smoke fills my mouth. Perhaps this fits with what BobbyD said, dunno. I have just learned to breathe easy and smoke slowly...as if you probably didn't know that already.
