I placed an order with P&C for some tobacco, and as a filler to make the free shipping price, I added a bag of their Best of the Rest tobacco. I wasn't expecting too much for a buck an ounce tobacco, but the reviews where very good. I received my order and cellered everything away except the Best of the Rest as I wanted to give it a try. The bag note was not bad, but I think it was the worst tobacco I've ever smoked. I don't think it could even be used to mix. Honestly, I had to take a break after smoking it. This stuff would give a hobby horse a headache. I really wanted to like it, especially since in the reviews nearly everyone loved it. Oh well, if I find someone who likes it, it'll have a new home.

I love how Cornell & Diehl and Smoking Pipes' version is gloriously named Grand Croupier! I've actually been meaning to try a bit of the non-aromatic versions. Hey man, you knew what you were getting into! I certainly don't blame you for giving it a try, though maybe in the future you'd be better off shelling out an extra buck or two for a Stokkebye, Newminster or C&D bulk.

This has been my experience with rag tag mixes, whether mine or someone else's. When I think about making a mix and limit the number of blends or single-leaf, I usually hit it pretty well. But when I just dump it all in there, either the flavor is muddy and bland or unpleasant, or it is harsh and full of bite. I've had at least one premium blend of numerous tobaccos that had the same problem. Tobacco blending is an art, or when it isn't, it is nasty. Mostly, professional blenders earn their keep. People occasionally get lucky and enjoy a random mix, but I think the odds aren't good.

I said I only got it to make the limit on shipping and really didn't expect a lot. But I didn't expect it to make me sick either. Maybe next time I'll fill out the order with MM cobs.
