How do you folks handle the information/misinformation, and the well-meaning but oft-hyperbolic (or histrionic) reactions of family/friends/colleagues/news-media??
I tell them they've mistaken me for someone that cares and to mind their own business. My exact words aren't so kind but this site gets a bit uptight about language.

A purile response from the smoker is what these people desire. Ignoring their incivility I think is best as it emasculates them if they aren't irritating you. Rude people do not like being ignored. Even my smoke retort is a bit rude but, second hand smoke kills, says so on the internet. :D

I would say, yeah it's sad that medical journals publish obviously bogus propaganda such as that...makes you wonder how much else of what they publish is untrue.

One of the greatest doctors my family ever knew was Dr. Wall. The man smoked a pipe all day every day. That's how the nurses kept up with him, followed the smoke trail. He lived into his 90s.
Pipe smoking has been proven to relieve stress and stress kills a lot of people. When people want to start in on pipe smoking and cigar smoking I just remind them, none of us are getting out alive. May as well enjoy the time you got.

As I usually ask, a citation please. I've seen studies which suggestt such as a possibility, none as a prove fact. Or, that such an effect, stress relief, would override the attendant health damage. So, please list the supporting citation, where did you read this this fact?

I very politely tell them to fuck off and mind their own business.
YES! If a pipe is going to kill me, then go to the back of the line...(It's a LONG list)...

Bradley has the best response. Intrusive monologs do not warrant a response. If you feel that you must say something, a simple, polite smile and “I’m busy right now” should suffice. What these prople are after is control and disruption. Deny them the pleasure.

It was in some articles I found researching pipe smoking. How legitimate they are I'm not sure. I retract my statement of it being a fact until I can find those articles again and be sure of their authenticity. From a personal experience I can say it's a fact for me, which I should have said instead. If I find the articles I'll post them.

The older members know what's coming below. I can't resist admonishing those who start smoking for all the wrong reasons, without dong the due diligence.
Opinions and "suggestions" but, no citation of serious studies, presentations, etc. in your two links. Just accept you, I and others smoke for the nicotine and/or enjoyment. A selfish choice to be sure but, a selfish behavior can be good for the soul. I've still not read nor heard of any convincing studies to support that smoking, pipe or otherwise provides benefits which outweigh established facts regarding the detriment to health. Taking the carcinogens from incinerated tobacco leaf into the body is simply not healthy. I accept the risk, do not try to justify doing so as other than a wee, enjoyable vice.
Risky behavior is certainly acceptable if one has considered the various risks. Engaging in risky behavior based on hearsay, opinion and anecdotal information is, in my opinion, a poor choice. But, we all make choices based on limited or even no information simply because we want to. If it ain't illegal, harms only yourself well, I say go for it. But, I do feel a bit sorry for those who justify such a choice without making an objective investigation. Smoking can adversely impact one's health even as it can diminish one's disposable income.
All of which is neither here nor there with respect to the OP and his face to face with the "enemy."

I started smoking a pipe because it calms me down. Having anxiety disorder I'll take calm anyway I can get it. I looked into those articles and others after I was already smoking a pipe.
If you're looking for proof from a scientific or medical source, you'll never find one as they are set on their anti tobacco ways. But other people reporting the same experience as myself tells me there is some weight to matter.
But I suppose in the end I can only speak for myself. My pipes reduce anxiety and stress for me, therefore it is fact in my case.

I was simply hopeful you'd found the ever elusive "holy grail".
And, more power to you. If you do something to relax, read a book, smoke a cigarette or pipe, fish for trout, yoga, etc. and it relaxes you, go for it. That mind trick works for all sorts of ailments. It's not the "what you do" but, believing that what you did worked. Your expectation was achieved and you feel better. Nothing wrong with that.
Good on you!

I'll keep looking. It's a habit of mine to research things, I like to learn as much as I can on whatever catches my interest. If I find your holy grail, I'll be sure to send it to you.
Books are another great escape and they pair well with pipes
