I am very new to pipe smoking, and went on a purchaser frenzy when i found out that Denmark, where I live in, is pretty famous among pipe enthusiasts. That said, I knew nothing about pipes (and still don't) so i ended up buying a lot of junk.

One of the batches I recieved from a trade where I offered the equivalent of $150 for all of the sellers pipes looked like this:


I know that pipe nr 4 is a Savinelly, and nr 5 is one of my favourits, even though I have no idea what it is. This post is about pipe nr 2 though. I gave it a try yesterday, and it felt very nice. A bit larger that what I am used to, but still comfortable and sturdy. I spared this image with some other enthusiasts, describing that I wasn't sure about the metal part in the middle and was wandering if it was a military connector.

It turns out that it is a mechanical way of cooling the smoke and diverting moisture. But it is not a stinger. It is, as far as i know, called a capillary collector, by Orlik

It screws onto the woodden part 8metal against wood) but the mouthpiece slides into the other end, where two metal tubes seem to align so that one goes into the other.

I find it so interesting to see the gimmicks that pipe makers tried to get a leg up on the competition. I like that only a few have survived to this day. Like the Peterson system pipes and the falcons. But most just never really stuck around. Seems like this should work pretty well without effecting the quality of the smoke. I wonder if pipe smoking was more popular what "breakthroughs" and innovations would happen now.
