I assume that you are referring to the Iron Head Baker recording, which was made at a prison farm not too far from my home. You might want to sample Lead Belly's rendition, which is far superior in my opinion.

Of course, Ram Jam beats each/every other version to death.

No one else will ever be able to cover FREE BIRD without sounding like pale imitators, some songs are just so tied to a certain sound, time and group that they are simply uncoverable.

I always thought Molly Hatchet did a decent job on their live album.
