This is not a 1700$ pipe. But this is not the first time I saw this on eBay
The seller’s hope is the someone will pay $1,700.00 for this pipe.
This is may be viewed by many as an optimistic expectation.?
Ah, gotcha. Thought you may be hopeful in getting it for that. Indeed, that's a crazy amount. I've never paid more than $150 for a Dunhill, even paid $20 for my latest one.
Given how slow packages are being processed, I'd say the optimistic part would be the delivery date.
I looked up this pipe on eBay now. It is listed as new, but actually is an unsmoked estate. There are two listings for the same pipe, the other listing is asking for 1500$
The eternal hope of reeling in a sucker willing to spend that much on a pipe that’s worth roughly half the listed price according to a cursory Google search for the model number.
I do think the pipe is beautiful. If it was new it would easily be 700$ - 800$. Since it is an unsmoked estate, I would put the value around 350$, where it would have a fair chance of being sold.
The Dunhill mystique is an abomination relentlessly insisting itself that, to me, absolutely does not truthfully promote the qualities that these pipes have. The pipe in question would be such as bought by some rich guy cruising on his 75 ft. yacht, planning to trade up to a 125 ft.
However, it its not uncommon for pipe potentates to say that pre-1950 Dunhills have magic. I had a Dunhill patent that did not. In fact, smoking over100 pipes of many different brands, ranging in price from $50-$400, I never found magic. I did have pipes that I loved more and some I loved the most, but that love was based on shape, finish, stem comfort and
clenchability.
It was never about some supposed magic; thus when I see pipes brandished as above, I get more than little irritated.

Such optimism about Dunhills seems to be contagious these days (though perhaps this is an unfortunate choice of words).
There's this perfectly nice group 2 Root Briar "reduced to sell" described as "grandfather's. . . pride and joy" at $1850 (with its box and some papers and free shipping)--shown with some photos far too blurry to read its nomenclature
