Opinion of Current/Modern Stanwell Pipes?

I've been meaning to grab a nice acorn by Stanwell for a good while and I noticed that the brand has changed quite a bit. It looks like a lot of the Sixten designs were still being produced well into 90's or so, but seem pretty rare now with mostly freehands and standard shapes being produced. Also noticed that they seem hard to buy online; SmokingPipes, Cup o' Joe's, Tobacco Pipes, and many others don't seem to carry Stanwell as a brand, with Pipes & Cigars being the only website that seems to have them.

What's going on with Stanwell? Are they still producing a good product?

I had a newer featherweight bent Dublin from ....2014 i think, and it was my favorite smoker. Then the stem came loose years ago, and I attempted to fix it, and ruined the entire pipe.

Haven't been able to find another one like it since.

Great pipes in my opinion.

Sinse they changed ownership and moved manufacturing out of Denmark, people don't seem to be buying them. I have not smoked a non Danish Stanwell, so I can't say.
What I CAN say is that 10 years ago Stanwell pipes were right there with Savenelli and Peterson. These three were the common answer to, "what should I buy for my first pipe?"
I quit pipe smoking for 7 years. When I came back Spring 2024....I have not heard a thing about Stanwell.

I believe Pipes & Cigars owns the Stanwell brand now, which is why you primarily see them there in the US.

I think they're often a bargain for a pipe with an acrylic stem. Good wood, not bitter. I collect shape 63.

I do prefer my older Danish ones but so it goes. Miss the shape 126 also.

You can look at European sites like the Danish Pipe Shop for more variety.

Stanwell is owned by STG now, and made in Italy.
I can't comment on the Italian-produced Stanwells, except that they are good-looking pipes.
All of mine were made during the Danish era.

It's still easy to find estates that are made in Denmark on Ebay.
There is a vendor on Etsy who lists only Stanwells. He used to be a sponsor here.
You may be lucky to find one that is unsmoked and boxed. They come up from time-to-time

Prefer the older Danish ones but have a few modern ones made in Italy and they are still nice pipes and reliable smokers. I picked up the newer ones from Pipes & Cigars for some ridiculous price like $29 or something like that during a special promotion and wish I’d bought a dozen of them.

I have not noticed a difference in the quality of the pipes. And Italy seems to crank out the pipes, they have the production capacity.

And they were $20 a copy with numerous shapes. I did buy a dozen. Best pipe deal ever!

Smart man! Wish I’d been that smart. Great deal on any factory pipe. Especially a Stanwell!

The drilling, fit and finish on those were spectacular. There were some rather large areas of fill on some, but hey, for $20 it was a no brainer…

I have a Stanwell bulldog (shape 32?) from a few years back and it smokes very well. Never bitter and doesn't gurgle even though I clench a lot.

Yeah, I looked at those. Pretty cool for a reasonable price. The newest POTY by them is not bad, too, and looks like it's a small acorn. May grab one.

It is hard to settle when you clearly remember the quality and type of pipe you got from Denmark and have to settle for the new version.
