Opening A Tin? Show Us!

Today I have two examples to show. The first one is GLP Renaissance from 2002. The tin has rusted through (spots of rust can be seen staining the label from underneath) and the tobacco is very dry. So dry that it felt almost like a solid block that had to be pried out of the tin:









Note, however, that the tobacco still smelled wonderfully. I hydrated it by sealing it in a container with some water, as shown below. The water never touches the tobacco. It’s a process similar to using the usual humidifying disks. The recovery takes place over a couple of weeks.

The second example is a tin of Rattray’s Black Virginia from 2004, almost the same age of the Renaissance tin. The tobacco is fresh, with a toxic smell of sweet raisins, and ready for the pipe:

I’ve read in a post on this forum that manufacturers do no package their blends for long time storage. While that may be true, it is clear that some take much more care with their product than others.

Decided not to wait to pop my tin of Black Frigate any longer.



The smell on opening the tin was very interesting -- phenol and those old permanent markers came to mind first. I have a fondness for both odors, so this was no deterrent! I'll post my smoking notes in WAYS.

Ruh roh. Opened a tin of Petersen Irish Flake (2013). No “pfft” on this one and a bit of rust around the perimeter. But not completely dried out either, about right even. We’ll see!

Date on can shows 10/23. I added this to a random order around that time and this is the first time opening it and trying it. Gonna let it air out a bit and fire up a bowl after get done running errands.

With Thanksgiving coming next week, I felt like opening something holidayish. 2022 Sutliff Cringle a flake will work nicely. Lots of sparkling crystals. But it sure made me nervous when I opened it.

That’s caused by a chemical reaction when the tobacco touches that black paper thingy they packed it with.
I know this because I called Sutliff and spoke to the production manager and he told me himself.

Yes, interesting cross section of flavors. Smoked three bowls of it this evening trying to work out what I'm tasting. Interplay between the Katerini flavors and top notes make for a complex flavor profile that doesn't come across as an overpowering aromatic. Added flavors are subtle I suppose is my point.

It’s worth a try for the Tin Note alone. The flavor is good and nic levels are lower medium without any bite.

None of them goop up, gurgle, bite or require a ridiculous amount of relights. They all burn clean and taste great too!
