Not sure this counts as a “tin” but I found this in my cellar this morning after who knows how many years and cut open the Mylar. It smells divine! Going to light up a pipe right now. The pipe is hand carved with a sharp knife a few years ago whilst sitting on the Oregon coast with a mug of coffee. I shaped the stem and sanded everything with 220 grit sandpaper when we got home. It took me about a week of patiently carving and sharpening and lots of blisters, but it worked well. The block I bought from Mark Tinsky and he drilled the holes in a square block and turned me loose. It was a fun project and smokes beautifully!

Nicely done.
I’ve got a couple blocks from him waiting for me to do something with them.

Got a little TAD haul in today and thought i'd pop some tins.

First up, Sun Bear Navy Cask:

And next was another one i wanted to try as i've had good experiences thus far with the 4th Gen products, especially 1931 flake and Va/Or Flake.

So i'm now giving their Va/Per a try:

How is the Fathers, Friends Fire VAPer? I got some the week it came out and haven’t touched it. I enjoy the VAOr they made.

Only one bowl in thus far. I'd say it's showing decent fresh outta the tin. Im gonna give it some time to open up a bit and come back to it in a day or two. The one and two week marks after tin opening should tell the tale. So far i prefer the VA/Or. That was a banger right from the pop.

Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader from 2008, courtesy of Robert Bittner (@rbittner). He sent this to me out of the blue at the end of 2022. No identifying date on this — just a Tinderbox retail sticker for $11.95 — but Mr. Bittner says that 2008 was the only time he visited that shop. I suppose it could be even older than that if it sat in that shop for a bit and was packed and shipped even earlier.

Anyway, it’s really excellent, if a bit different than the Squadron Leader tin I last smoked a couple years ago. The primary thing I note is of course subdued Latakia, more musty, earthy Orientals, and richer, stronger Virginias. I’d be surprised if this gets more rounded with the time to breathe and rest in a jar. Regardless, it’s an excellent blend to smoke well aged.IMG_3161.jpegIMG_3162.jpegIMG_3163.jpeg

By 2009, which is the earliest I started buying SL they had moved away from the gold foil paper to plain white paper insert. So that may be one of the last batches to get the gold paper. Looks great!
