Never seen this stuff before. Is it new? Looks like it might smoke hot. Cheers.
No, been around quite some time as far as I know - my first tin was couple of years ago. Usual virginia rules apply, gently does it.

Which blend is that? I know it's Peter Heinrich's but which one?

Opened a tin of Peterson Sherlock Holmes. 
Was in the mood for some Jack Knife and after hunting through the jars on the shelves noted i had none currently ready for smoking, soooooo -- off to the cellar i went. This is an 8oz tin dated 10/13 from the factory, which i bought in 12/13 as the labelling suggests. Smells great. Base of golden flue-cured with red va and kentucky, pressed into cakes and finally RR'd. What's not to love? Grabbing a Radice and digging in...
I finally got to opening one of my SG FVF tins from 2008. I have a pound of bulk jarred up, but these tins have been scaring me.
The one I opened is not pretty, it got all jumbled up, but the tobacco is full of sugar crystals and smells great. Im gonna smoke a bowl tonight, jar the rest for the future.....probably tomorrow...then the next day.....

I noticed something weird with this tin of FVF. The top and bottom of the tin were sucked in, that's not weird. When I popped it with my knife, it let out a hiss, and the tin top and bottom popped out a bit. Then I noticed RUST all around the rim of the tin, and starting to go down the sides. THEN I noticed it was NOT rust......its goooo.
It scrapes off with shiny tin underneath. It it sticky and smells strongly of tobacco. Its 100% not rust, I tasted it...its tobacco goo. The tobacco is moist, full of plume, and smells delightful.
This is the oldest rectangular tin I've ever opened, 17 years old.
Has anyone seen this?
The seal was completely intact, and the tobacco is perfect.
Its difficult to get a picture of the goo with my $80 phone camera, but I'll try.

A nice blend, and a sentimental favourite memory from 20 years ago.
Escudo from 2017. Just opened the tin and in the first third of the first bowl. Last tin I opened was from around 2000 and pretty much not worth smoking. Time will tell how this one goes.
I almost wonder if it's degradation of the gasket, interacting with tobacco "fumes"... degrading and absorbing and sort of melting...
I have had what I think is similar/same happen with Haddos. The inner layer seemed to have bubbled and degraded. In my case it was more advanced and went all the way through.
I emailed J. Reeves and he said he had never seen such a thing before. I chalked it up to the Haddos, as I know others have had trouble with it long- term in the tin
But maybe it is a tin-wall sealant material defect that rarely happens? I assume that what we see as inner wall is something that is applied to the actual, structural wall
Mine seemed to have bubbled/melted, eaten through, dried, and left crystally-plasticy shards loose around the perimeter inside
What was off about the year 2000 tin? Flavor too soft from age?
I’ve always wondered about those old painted top AC Petersen tins from that time. They seem to be remembered fondly, but maybe they don’t age well.
