Today, I'm celebrating one year as a pipe smoker. What a great year of learning about this wonderful hobby/lifestyle. At annual physical last month, my doc was beaming - "you lost weight, your cholesterol and blood pressure are all down and you are the healthiest you've ever been, what are you doing different?" Beats me....
Last April, on vacation, a gentleman smoking a pipe on the balcony opposite caught our attention. My wife remarked she wished I smoke a pipe instead of a cigar, and the wheels started rolling........
I've made a few mistakes and learned plenty. I've acquired a wonderful collection of mostly British pipes and honed my blend tastes to some English blends as well. Of course, I aspire to more "pipe dreams". The tobacco choices seemed so overwhelming a year ago. Yesterday I marveled at how effortless packing/lighting and smoking my pipe has become. A match or two per bowl seems the norm these days, a far cry from a year ago. Tongue bite? Yes, I remember that as well, in the distant past.
Thanks to all the fine folks here who aided and abetted my passion for the briar pipe. I still remember my cigar store clerk telling me not to waste much money on a pipe, as I'll be back to the cigar in short order. I think there are still two unsmoked cigars in my dusty humidor....
Another aspect of pipes that I hadn't counted on was the joy I get from refurbishing estate pipes. Refinishing estate pipes has allowed for me to acquire some fine pipes with my meager PAD budget. I appreciate all the folks who have helped me learn and hone this craft (ejamoes and Cajungy not withstanding).
Thanks Folks! I started the day with a cherished Ferndown and will pull out my $20, "Italian Briar" basket Ebay pipe that started it all.
I'm indebted to everyone for their camaraderie and assistance in the past year. My travel has fortunately allowed me to meet some fine folks thru shops on the East Coast. I may never have the chance to meet some members, but consider them valuable pipe friends as well.
Smoke safe folks and many thanks!

I have understood similar unintuitive health improvements after changing cigarettes or cigar for pipe, specially for blood pressure and stress related issues. Actually the effects are very similar to those of people who do 8 minutes a day of meditation (which makes all sense, if you ask me). But how do you explain the weight loss and parallel cholesterol decrease out of the pipe?

Happy anniversary, my friend. Hope you have many more in the brotherhood of the briar.

Nicotine is an appetite suppressant, plus some people eat out of boredom, so if your busy doing something else you don't eat. That could easily explain weight loss. Now if you stopped eating what was giving you high cholesterol numbers that would explain that.

That would explain a non-smoker starting smoking... In this case, it was a change from cigar to pipe, which would maintain, if not decrease, the nicotine...

The guy seems more interested in pipes then he ever was into pipes. He probably smokes pipes more than he ever smoked cigars.

That is definitely true photoman, cigars were an occasional treat, pipes a daily item. To clarify both BP and cholesterol are all down to normal limits. I'm probably a few pounds over my "ideal" weight, but won't quibble about that.
I'm still a nic-wimp, most of my blends are mild English's.
I did get a new, er old, as is my usual, pipe yesterday. A neat little "Garfinkels" billiard from Steven Laug, a pipe friend from another forum. Garfinkels was a Washington DC shop that closed in the 80's, known mostly for their tobacco blends but had a line their own, Algerian briar pipes, made in France. A nifty classic with a slice of local history. I also found a neat Comoys Prince on Ebay as well, that is enroute.

Well, the wife has been on Weight Watchers this past year and I'm a by-product, what she eats, I eat. We've cut our portions down, splitting dinners, etc. I also found that I don't drink as much beer but ice-water with the pipe. I also got back to running on the treadmill more this year, to offset any negative effects from pipe smoking.
The pipe definitely makes me slow down and just reflect, something this ADD person has never done. I'm less stressed for sure, despite family/work pressures not changing.
Those things all seem to be conspiring for a healthier Al

It seems to me you have found a good balance :) Good diet, good exercise and relaxed times, no wonder your body and health show it. :puffy:

Welcome to the 1 year club, Al. I smoked my first pipe the other day, too! It's a no-name billiard, but it smokes great. Most of my pipes are still estates and my collection is small, but I wouldn't change anything.
