Is MB's Navy Flake 'burley-forward'? I know it has other tobaccos in the mix, but I was wondering. That's what I intend on smoking to-day.

Okay, I enjoy burley a lot, single leaf, in English blends, as a condiment, as a base for other leaf, and so on. I've had some burley that's harsh or too bland, but mostly I enjoy it. But I also like Virginias, Va/Per, Orientals, and so on. There are individual blends I don't enjoy, but I have a wide range of enjoyable tobaccos and blends. So I'm intrigued that a number of members -- I don't know, maybe 30% -- really don't taste or don't like burley at all. I believe 'em. People know what they like. So burley is probably somewhat polarizing, but some of us truly enjoy burley, and I'd say it is my favorite leaf, among the many I enjoy. But you can't persist to enjoy something. If I didn't like burley, I sure wouldn't smoke it.

MB’s Navy Flake is the easiest flake for a beginner like me to smoke that I’ve found, in terms of moisture content. I’ve been successful with it rubbed and folded and stuffed as well.

It’s got enough of the burley flavour to be easily noticeable, and I didn’t find the rum overshadowed it. It’s one of my favourites. Not as refined as solani, but a good, honest burley flake.

Looking forward to your review.

And it ages outstanding. My current return to pipe-smoking was triggered by a sealed 11-year old tin of MB NF found in a drawer. Very delicious.

I got some Haunted Bookshop a few months ago, wasn’t a huge fan. Sat in jar a month or two. Based on discussion here, trying it now in a cob, much more enjoyable. Burns well, not too hot and the taste is much better than when I first got it.

Interesting side note there was a distinct pop upon opening the 8oz ball jar that had been sealed tight these past weeks. I hope that is some sign of the aging process, off gassing or whatever. It does taste different. More rich, less hot cigarette taste. I like occasional cigarette, but not as a pipe taste. Onward to explore more flavors.

Over the holidays I smoked a lot of straight burley and find it is more and more enjoyable. To be sure, any blend is more interesting to smoke as my taste buds become more experienced, however the burley gives me a good base tobacco taste with occasional nuttiness, cocoa and even a bit of spice as the bowl progresses. Some hints of cigar too.

My next step will be to blend the burley with virginia and some oriental leaf and see what happens, I think it'll be good. In the meanwhile I am expecting a few C&D blends from the US which I am eagerly waiting to try.
