Bill,
The pipe is 18,400 Yankee dollars if you live outside the European Co-Prosperity Sphere. If you live inside the bubble, you get to pay 18% VAT bringing your total to 22,500 Yankee dollars. Either way, it's laughable. Pipes are for smoking. If you want sculpture, buy a Remington.
Cheers,
Chili

I’d never buy a pipe that looks like that, or costs as much as that... but I think the lacquer work itself is beautiful. It does look very odd on that billiard though, doesn’t it? A koi motif such as that deserves to be on a more flowing, sinuous, elegant sort of shape. Oh well, I’m sure it will be someone’s crown jewel soon enough. Better them than me!

Someone could attach a briar and stem to the corner of the frame on a Monet painting and get ten million dollar pipe, but is that for the pipe? Same with an eight carat diamond or a classic Lambro roadster. At any price point, to some high-flyers, this is discretionary spending. At least Bill and Melinda try to be wise and beneficial with their billions, to whatever degree they succeed or don't.

The "deep clear" finish is called Urushi. A laborious lacquer process that involves many layers and lots of polishing.

Trouty!
It's really a prepossessing pipe. I've seen uber-fugly, absolute wastes of briar being praised to no end, yet this one gets all the rotten tomatoes? Hmm, guess it's more like sour grapes for not being able to afford it? :-?

The lacquer technique that the Japanese artisans use is beautiful. But, if they use urushi, and you are sensitive to urushoil (poison Ivy, oak, etc), don't bother. I had a fountain pen made using urushi and celluloid ... Had to sell it as my hands would swell when I used it.

I guess I’m more of a tobacco guy. I’m also a guy without the disposable income to even consider such a pipe, so it’s kinda moot

Think I'm going draw two fish with a Sharpie on this brand new Country Gentleman cob that I bought.
I'll translate Country Gentleman into Japanese and put it on ebay for $9,500 and see what happens.

Ludicrous is the word that comes to mind!
Actual value might be realized when it’s somebody’s estate pipe.
Now, how much do you spend on tobacco for that baby?
