Hello to all! Im a legally blind pipe maker in the DFW area in texas. Ive been making pipes for 2 years now and have had good feedback on my pipes. Ive used briar, morta and even Catlinite stone/ native American pipe stone, but now i want to make olive pipes as well. I ushaly do not sell my pipes under $250 for the time and work that goes into making pipes. Can olive pipes sell for that price? Theres not a whole lot of info on olive pipes, if theres any pipe makers who use olive or some who smokes an olive wood pipe. Id love to hear feed back on olive pipes.

Heres some pics of my work 20190810_220943.jpg20201210_161714.jpg20180901_002443.jpg20190810_220943.jpgView attachment 5920020200613_104523.jpg

FE.RO PIPES

Fe.Ro Olive Wood Pipes
Fe.Ro briar and olive wood pipes are produced at the Figli di Federico Rovera pipe factory in Varese, Italy, northwest of Milan. The company was established in 1949 by Federico Rovera with the help of his sons and is the second largest pipe manufacturer in Italy. The family-owned business produces pipe brands for well known names in the trade throughout Europe. However, pipes imported to the USA carry their own brand name, Fe.Ro, an acronym of the founder's name.

Central Italian briar is exclusively used in Figli di Federico Rovera's pipe production with the exception of the company's olive wood pipes of course. Burls are harvested from the Tuscany region and must be 50 or more years old to meet the company's standards. Only high grade "Extra" blocks are selected, which means that even their less expensive pipes carry the heritage of higher grade briars. The briar blocks are air-dried versus kiln- or oven-dried. Though this process is more time consuming, it is said to result in a sweeter and drier smoking pipe.

I think some Olive Wood pipes are gorgeous. I hear they smoke hotter. If you're accustomed to getting more than $250 for your briar pipes, I see no reason you couldn't get closer to that for a well carved Olive Wood pipe. I'm guessing Olive Wood may be slightly easier to work with and has less total scrap throw aways due to flaws. So your labor may be less.

To provide the short version to directly answer your question, in general, I don't think a Carver can charge the same price for Olive Wood as they can for Briar pipes.

I will agree with you on that ive started carving an olive wood pipe its a beautiful wood to turn and sand it feel just as hard as briar so far its taking about the same time to take to make a briar pipe i smoked the olive pipe today it smoked fantastic i only had to light the pipe once and smoked all the way to the bottom with no problem the bowl stayed Relativity cool no heating problems i know i cant sell them for the price for my briar still figuring out what i can charge for olive pipes and if its worth my labor but this one im working on im very impressed with olive wood may have to make my self one to keep see what punishment olive pipes can take i made a small briar pipe for my shop pipe when i work its smoked almost every day several times aday is holding up well will try it will olive to see if it can hold up to briar

Holy mackerel, that pipe that can support a bear must be huge! And where can you find 30' long pipe cleaners?

The rest of them are impressive as well.

That's really cool, and unique in a good way. I say that because sometimes "unique" pipes are total abominations.

Tarek Manadily: Pipe prices are unjustified and unjustifiable.

I had olive wood pipes and they did not seem to smoke hot, but then again I puffed like a freight train so I wouldn't know.

In my mind you should charge what you feel your pipes are worth, which is something that only you can determine.

Olive usually has superior grain. To say that you can't charge for it what you can charge for briar doesn't hold up given its performance and grain.

yeah. The question is what will someone pay and how long can you wait to find a buyer.

Thank you very much for the advice! My first olive wood pipe that im still working on, i could not wait to smoke it so i did. So far it smokes fantastic no heating problems. It gives off a pleasant olive smell and gives a sweet flavor to my tobacco. Maybe it will be one that i keep smoke the crap out of it and see how olive holds up to briar, but sofar its a beautiful wood to use for pipes!
