Great article dixie, thanks for sharing. I REALLY got into cigars from 1994-2005. Had I been into pipes then like I am now I probably would have owned over 50 of some really top name carvers.

dix - thanks for that great article. It's still remarkably current, though Sherlock Holmes in SanFran has morphed into pulversbriar, where Marty Pulver is still carrying on. I don't know about the NML company. The prices 6 years ago have almost doubled - the 100g McClelland tin is no longer $10, but it is still a great deal for intaking of the Lady Nic.

I was really enjoying this article until I read "Every cigar tastes more or less like every other cigar". Clearly, the guy is/was clueless when it comes to cigars.

Fun article, Dixie, thanks for posting. The prices being quoted had me looking for the publication date. Good luck finding a Dunhill in clean condition for under $100 bucks these days.

Fun to read, before ebay days. Wouldn't you have liked to have bought ebay stock in Sept. '98 at $1.67, currently at $55.01, Think of all the great pipes that could be bought with some of the profits! From what I've been seeing the estate market is currently very strong, in the short term, the holiday season is supporting prices very well, but even further out I think prces are going to continue to be strong for a variety of reasons.

I agree with dmcmtk. In 2007 there were about 5900 listings for pipes on ebay on any given day. Now it's closer to 30,000. There are a lot more buyers competing for a limited market of high grade estates. The success of this market has also resulted in increased fraudulent sales of ultra high grade pipes, so be careful out there.

Good read.
I've bought some very fine Danish Freehands from ebay.
In fact, my favorite non-meerschaum is an Erik Nording that I recently purchased for less than $75. including shipping.
I've bought a dozen or so off of ebay over the last year and will sanitize the pipe when they arrive.
