Hotshot-

I too buy mine on ebay. I bought a bunch at once, so the price per was lower. As mentioned above, the Feathers are EXTREMELY sharp. I like them, but gave some to a friend and he cussed me later, cut his face all up!! I don't think I'd want to shave my head with them, but then again, I've never shaved my head with anything, so what do I know! LOL!!

Ya'll got me hesitant to try the Feather's... but some great news, my wife pulled out a shaving mug tonight with four DE Razors in it. I didn't even know we had them. There are two very old Gillette's and a newer Gillette. Also there is an old Schick Persona that used the injector cartridge blades. Anyway, I will post some photos of them when I get them cleaned up.
Now, what blade should I try in these? Not sure I wanna cut up my mug or my head with the Feather's. :)

I recently purchased an Edwin Jagger razor and like it very much. For DE blades, I like both the aforementioned Red Personna and Wilkinson Sword. Both are sharp (but not as sharp as Feather) and smooth. Nothing is as sharp as a Feather blade, but they can be irritating on my tender skin.
Smorgdonkey, I've never tried conditioner, but when travelling I sometimes use shampoo. It works quite well. Maybe I'll try conditioner next time.

I've got the same razor & case already pictured here, it's god enough that I havent tried looking for another.
Since there's a forum for everything you can find a lot of good information on razors and blade types at Badger and Blade. They had someone they were reccomending for a starter kit of blades. It was a pretty good sample of the top reccomendations. (Its been a few years since I bought that pack)
Prep is much more important when you move away from todays cartridge razors.

Conditiner is a good reccomendation. After your beard/stubble is washed to strip the oils and softened by hot water you can spread on the conditioner and leave ot there as a base layer under whatever cream/soap you use. It is good to aoften the hair and provides a goos slick layer as well.

Op if you do invest in a safety razor, it's also a good idea to invest in a shaving brush and as ae1pt mentioned good shaving soap.
I prefer boar brushes and use a tallow based soap.
At least two passes with the razor is also advisable, as is using the weight of the razor and holding it at the correct angle to the skin,to avoid nicks and the dreaded razor burn.

After reading this thread I had to go to see if I still had my old safety razor. I'll be dmned there it was in the cabinet just waiting for me. Then I spenta few seconds to find my shaving mug, soap and brush. Once they were found and cleaned up. I found a new blade and had the best shave I have in a long tine. I had to stop using it cause the Doc said I must be careful since I take blood thiners.
I only nicked myself once. I use an adjustable Gelette double edge. Didn't realize how much I missed the routine involved.
have a good day
