Old School Safety Razors..

I have about 2 year supply of generic plastic replacemnt razors for my sensor excel. But this thread has peeked my attention, might have to look into one of these old school safety razors.
Will probably stay away from the straight razor though. A couple year ago for my buddies wedding we went and got the straight razor shave at the barber. No question my skin felt as soft as it did on my Birthday, but the next day, the ingrown hairs on my neck were unbearable. I'll live with a little stubble to avoid that pain again.

I made the switch to a Double Edge (DE) safety razor about three months ago and love it.... Not looking back.
I got the Edwin Jagger De89lbl and use Feather blades (amazon.com). In addition, I use the Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream and a badger shaving brush. I learned quite a bit from YouTube videos on how to "wet shave" properly. After a few cuts and nicks, I've got the hang of it and now look forward to my old school daily shaving ritual, which is relaxing and therapeutic!

All I know is, I did spend $150 4-5 years ago on a razor, blades and soaps. I havn't bought anything new since. I don't what that is in savings, but it's savings im sure.

If I didn't have to shave every day for work a blade would last me for a month easy!

I got a straight razor last xmas. It's fun to use once in awhile but when I'm in a hurry I go for the tried and tested Gillette double blade.

The barber went through the whole process, so I do not blame him. I blame my sensitive skin. If I shave against thr grain on my neck, I get the same results. That being said, next time I will let the guy know what happened last time and maybe they have a way to prevent it from happening again.

Reporting back, the Walgreens cartridge razor, Studio for Men, works very well. Nice light handle and excellent blades.

I'm thinking of laying in a few more blades now that they are still in an introductory mode and quality control is high.

As I may have mentioned, the handle and six blades sold for $5.99, compared to $15.99 for five replacement Gillette

cartridges only (no handle). The mark-up on blades is way beyond the cost of manufacture, in my opinion. They keep

them under a locked panel and you have to request them from a clerk. You have to make a special request to get ripped

off (in my humble opinion).
On another front, I ran an errand to the mall the other day, and I saw (but didn't visit) an entire store devoted to shaving!

No kidding. They had it all in there, and I don't even want to know the prices. The boar bristle brushes likely come from

college educated boars, etc. This suggests to me that there is a wave of boutique shaving equipment arriving. So if you

want to buy a safety razor or a straight razor, and supplies, better go ahead while a safety razor still goes for a lowly (???)

forty bucks. I remember when I paid about $3 for mine eons ago. Alas, I think it's lost.

I only use the hairs from the butt of a college educated badger It's a little more expensive, but they take better care of their hair than their more red-kneck counterparts.

I'm really loving this DE razor (Edwin Jagger 89bl). I had nearly perfect technique the first time since I have sharpened knives with Japanese waterstones for years, and this was pretty much the same exact technique, find the sweet spot and apply constant but light pressure. My grip was a little off though and it cost me... I pressed slightly too hard and wam, off came a large chunk of face, I do not mean a little red bloody spot, like a large patch of face just gone, like for that one stroke I had swapped my DE razor for a cheesegrater and used the extra fine setting without stoping until there was lots of blood...
The nice thing is the shaving cream is just amazing and the razor is soooo smooth and sharp, I am having absolutely no discomfort of any kind, even when I lost my face It's faster for me than my old plastic razor because it just cuts so much better, so I don't have to shave the same spot raw to look clean. So I'm very glad I switched, I'll still use the electric when I'm in a hurry, but it is nice to have a good blade around that works for a change.

lol 05venturer, me and the rest of the guys on the naval base I work at grew out our beards during the DOD furlough. I no longer have my beard. TMI I still have to shave my neck when I have a beard because the hair will connect and I'll be pegged as the local Sasquatch.
