Old School Safety Razors..

I've used them for at least 5 years. Ten bucks at an antique store for the old brass Gillette. Rite aid sells soap brush and mug kit for another ten bucks and get my blades at the 99 cent store. I haven't shaved for a couple months but thinking about it.

Yeah, I think the shaving equipment industry has overplayed its hand. I have only retreated to three blade

cartridges instead of four, but I could easily get back to the safety razor, if not the straight razor. I am

a little stuck on the compressed foam. I tried the soap and brush method, but I could never get a thick

enough lather. I love the idea, just not the actual experience -- love that boar bristle brush. Actually,

I was given a shaving gel as a gift, and though I don't use it daily, it works as well as the compressed foam.

Glad people are rebelling against the incredible prices, such that they have to come and unlock the case to

sell you shaving cartridges. Next they'll keep them in a vault. Yup, may have to go back to a safety razor.

I've wanted to take the plunge to a DE safety razor, and you fellows just pushed me into the deep end. I ordered a made in Canada 1932 safety razor with 30 blades should last me quite some time. Thanks for the push boys I look forward to rebelling against super power america and their over priced razor blades.

You want some real fun learn to straight razor shave after you take up DE. Straight shaving is the only good thing about getting dressed up. I tend to only put the work in on those nights.

Walgreens has come out with a competitor to the Gillette three-blade razor, speaking of how overpriced

the razor cartridges have become. The handle and six cartridges go for $5.99, compared to a five-pack

of the Gillette three-blade cartridges for $15.99. I just had to try it to see how the blades work. I have

found Schick and Wilkerson blades uneven and prone to nicks. The Walgreens blades claim to be made

in the USA, which to my mind is a good thing. However, if I find a safety razor in a catalog or come across

my old one, and find the blades, I may try that too. Gillette must be taking an incredible mark-up on these

blade cartridges. I've been patient with them for a long time. The Walgreens product is called "Studio for

Men."

Just priced safety razors on the net. The least expensive seemed not to have the butterfly head (the

two leafs that lift to expose the blade) and it was about $30. The least expensive butterfly version was

$40. The shaving brushes really go high, because of the luxury bristles, I guess. For a complete kit of

high level razor, blades, brush, soap and stand, you can easily go $150-up. So, if you have your old

safety razor, hang onto it! I'm looking for mine. I'm sure it cost me about $3 when I was in the French

and Indian War ... about which I'd say, guys, let's not fight that one again, please.

When I got mine I just went to a local supply shop called Sallys. They have everything for barbers and such. Payed like 10 bucks for it, and has been really good and solid do far!

Tired of the expensive cheap plastic razors that barely do the job and require tons of pressure, while getting relatively little hair off, inaccurately; just got a decent safety razor (Edwin Jagger De89bl), some Astra and Feather blades, and a starter badger brush with great reviews. It's clear it will not be quicker, but it will be cheaper and hopefully better quality, it looks much more classy for sure!

If I offended you I am greatly sorry that is not what I intend. It was mearly a joke, taking stab at corporate america/north america/canada as a whole. As I have worked with my share of Americans over my 11 years in the military, we are seldom differnt and I respect your pride in your nation.

Well I'm going to try a Mekur , the DE is how I started off many years ago .

so from what I'm reading maybe it's time to re-think this shaving thing :D

I'll chime in with the story of my face...
Since I was 15, and for most of my life, I have had a beard. I shaved it off when I was about 23 (for work) and I used a straight razor every day. I grew my beard back about a year later, and kept it full until about a year ago.
Now I used a Merkur safety razor (and Derby blades) to shave - leaving a goatee. I kinda want to grow out a Wyatt Earp mustache, but my kid cries every time I mention it, so...

Everyone seems to be a Edwin Jagger or Mekur fan that is willing to cough up $40-60 for one of these things. I only picked the EJ because the plating looks better, they both seem to be highly reviewed.

All I know is, I did spend $150 4-5 years ago on a razor, blades and soaps. I havn't bought anything new since. I don't what that is in savings, but it's savings im sure.

I agree Eric the EJ plating is much better than the Merkur. It's a great razor for that price. I just went for the Merkur because it was easier for me with the two step blade change.
