I do this all the time. I deprecate (not discard) older reviews of current blends. Tobacco is never the same year to year, just like wine, vintages are different, though not always detectable. Blenders occasionally tinker with the recipes. How close the tin of today resembles the blend reviewed 5-9 years ago is anyone's guess.
I agree with this. There’s a merlot I absolutely love called Toad Hollow. It’s nothing special or expensive. It just hit well with me. But the best year of it I ever had was from a 2003 vintage. I could never figure it out, but from about 2005 to 2008 those bottles were available & they tasted better than the exact same wine in current years. So whenever I saw them, I snagged them.
Still have 2 or 3 bottles in the rack. Unfortunately, I stored them leaning a little upside down because that’s how they sit in the rack. When I opened one this past December, the cork fell to piece & I had to strain out pieces. Fun.
I liked this wine so much that I actually called the winery to compliment & inquire. They said that there was a drought & the ground was exceptionally dry, which can apparently be good for wine grapes. I don’t know much about it all, but I appreciated the explanation.
