The only time I sampled the old version, it was kind of dry, and had lost a bit of its flavor. I wish I had tried a less compromised sample.

The sample murcia sent me was plenty moist, and is very tasty. In fact, I am drying it down a bit for my second bowl.
If I had the palate and writing ability of Jesse or Jim, I'd probably write what Jesse just did!
Thanks again, m.

Murica was kind enough to send me 3 perfect flakes from this tin of Bengal Slices and I truly appreciate it man, I know that wasn't cheap to obtain.
I've been meaning to come back to this thread to write my impressions but after the first bowl in a briar I really didn't have anything positive to say about it. It wasn't that it was bad, it was horrible and I didn't want to speak ill of such a nice gesture. Well, I waited a couple more weeks to try my second bowl but after talking with Murica about it I decided to give it a go in a cob... What a huge difference that made and I have to be honest, I was quite skeptical that I would notice any improvement but man, this was a night and day difference. The smoke was rich with some gentle spice coming through the retrohale, the topping was very subtle but definitely there and very similar to that of which we know of the new iteration. In short, I am totally honored to be a part of this and to experience a blend that is just two years younger than myself (The blend was from '82, you do the math).
Thank you so much, Murica, for giving me this experience! I must also note that I am really satisfied knowing that the new Bengal Slices is indeed similar to the original beast. In 35 years, it might just be as good as the blend I had the honor of tasting. That blend fared very well with age, much better than I have... ; )

Its so strange that it doesn't do well in most bears Dave. Horrible would be the word to describe it. But the cobs make it sing. It is quite enjoyable in one. Id imagine a meer would fare well, but I dont own one.
Jiminks should have his by the end of the week, and we will see if he gets the same thing from it.

Thank you Hawky454 for your kind comments. A lot of people think that Russ hit it out of the box with Bengal Slices but it is very interesting to hear another perspective where the consumer can taste the original and has smoked the new release. Even better is that said consumer finds them similar with the exception of the gulf of 35 years but is not suffering from rose tinted glasses from smoking it 'back in the day' so to speak. That just tickles me pink chum!

I too noticed that the only significant difference, imo, is age. Age does wonderful things to a blend, and the new slices seem like they could head a similiar path in 30 years. Kudos to everyone involved in the remake. Job well done.

Thank you 'Murica' for your kind words. Again after all the brick bats thrown at myself and Dan since the inception its rather nice to see that we were right and the 'nay sayers' were wrong and have all vanished behind the back of their armchairs. In essence we said we would do something and we set about seeing that the plan was put into operation with the net result measured not in money but in smokers satisfaction. We sold slightly over 27,000 tins of the combined blends last year so I guess people like the stuff and it can't all have been purchased by one person. Before anyone asks we made a very slight profit for the year 2016 after repaying all the costs associated with getting everything off the ground so in the final analysis running your own tobacco company can at best be described in the parlance of our President as revenue neutral!

Good to hear, Condorlover! You all have a great line up of tobaccos, something for everyone. I have always loved your version of Bengal Slices but I never had the original to compare it with. Besides the 35 year age difference I think you all got it spot on. When I think of how that 35 year old baccy must have tasted fresh I can't help but think of the current version. Good stuff to say the least.
