Somewhere there are roll-your-own guys saying, "Those crazy pipe smokers are buying our bag tobacco and smoking in their pipes."

I have enjoyed Peter Stokkebye blends for years, LNF, VaPer coins, Amsterdam and others. Fine tobacco and generous prices.

I've been finding lately that "ryo" blends are some of my favorites.. Jiminks isn't afraid of em, and I always trust his reviews.

I was also struggling with the shop owner’s idea that roll your own smokers would gravitate towards orientals and dark fired blends. Really? I’m not a cigarette smoker but those blends don’t sound like cigarettes to me. VaPers maybe because I’ve seen American Spirit with Perique but dark fired? Izmir? Really?

I've always wondered what kind of tobacco the popular cigarette brands use. It's not really possible to find out.. The flavor is hard to replicate, though. so there may very well be a variety or types used.

My Ohm Turkish red got here right on time, just a few days shipping, with the USPS bringing it the last miles. It looks like a fairly large cut for RYO purposes, but still useable I guess, but fine for pipes. It ships dry and looks like more than 16 oz, and smells good through the bag. I'll likely report back on how it smokes, but after a few bowls, to be fair to it.

Flavorful, mellow, a nice change from the standard Virginia and burley blends with its Turkish condiment. It's a good midday smoke, or all day smoke. This after about three bowls, also mentioned earlier in "What Are You Smoking?" thread. If I reach any other conclusions, I'll share them. It burns evenly and well. As mentioned, it is one of the bigger bags at 16 oz. All leaf, just a little moisture.

Good deal. So in the same vein as D&R.
Glad you’ll get your $11 worth!

This is like eight tins, at ten dollars a tin, would be eighty bucks, so about an eighth the cost of ten tins of mid-grade tobacco, but I got it on sale. The going price is $13.45, if I remember, so it is a little more. Even at eleven and change, you add shipping and tax, and it is about twenty bucks, but a nice bargain any way you figure. It will take me years to smoke though a pound, with a number of other blends in rotation. But it does give me a backstop if there's a big blend shortage, and I can always do mixtures (home blends) for variety. Had someone dressed this blend up in a fancy tin and told me it was $16 for 1.75 oz., and I'd smoked it, it would have still been enjoyable, and I wouldn't have any tip-off it came in a budget bag. Yes, similar to D&R. If you find a blend you like in this format, it is a good buy.

There is certainly bag tobacco the is mediocre, not good quality, not well preserved, cut more for RYO, little flavor. I went on the recommendation, long ago, of a Forums member who was actually recommending one of the more plain burley versions, but I trusted the brand, so I went for the Turkish. Also, I stayed with a mild blend. With strong blends, I want extra quality, so I go with what is generally lauded. If pipe tobacco gets difficult to purchase, I can cut back on bowls per week and go for years. I don't have many pounds, but I smoke up tobacco at a slow pace.
