Thanks again guys! I just finished the cleanups, there wasn't really much to do on the outside, mainly just scrubbing the inside of the shanks and stems. I took the cotton balls out while age, and wiped the outsides down real good, then finished the stem and shank cleaning. I'll post some more pics soon.

What a swell score, Pete! Those are two beautiful burners and I'm glad they've ended up with somebody who will appreciate them as much as you will.
Congratulations.

These are amazing pipes! Please let me advise you, be very careful using any kind of mechanized dental tool to clean these beauties; when I got my Hardcastle, not nearly as textured as your pipes, like a fool I took a sonic toothbrush to it with Murphy's Oil Soap. What I succeeded in doing was striping off the original finish. Happy ending; I got it refinished professionally and she looks great now. But be very careful trying to clean these unique pipes. Good luck!

Very nice, an easy clean up! Rusticated finished are tricky and you are limited as to what can be accomplished. Sometimes a finish strip (soak in alcohol)and restain is your best bet, but those don't need that. I'll use an worn toothbrush and a very, very mild oxyclean solution to remove darkening from the bowl top. Rusticated pipes don't buff well with carnuba. I typically just work in some Halycon (or the other?) with a tooth brush and hand buff with a cloth.

Neither of those pipes looks like it needs restoration. I'd do whatever you feel necessary to sanitize them,

spend a happy few hours listening to your favorite music (or whatever) and buffing the heck out of them

with a cloth, and they're ready to go. You especially don't want to muck up that nice acrylic (or whatever)

extension on the shank of the one pipe. Both these are beauties for under $30 each. Nice buy. Were

these online or at an antique store or yard sale?

For what it's worth coming from a newbie like me, you've probably done the best thing. The black pipe looks like it's formed from dried lava, and I doubt that effect can be easily duplicated. Nice score, both pipes!

Well, here they are, all cleaned up and ready to go! Can't really tell much of a difference, they were in very good shape to start with!

They didn't look like they needed much cleaning (at least on the outside), but you can notice a difference from beginning to end. They look good and that is a hell of a find, especially for $45.

They look super petes! Your score sent me to my local antique store today, but no luck. There were couple interesting ones I may go back for. A decent looking meer and a pipe labeled Silversmith that sterling banding all around the bowl depicting hunting/fishing scenes. Have to research that one.
