It's interesting that you sense an overlap with RB plug, Joe. I wasn't aware of RB plug until after it got discontinued, but I recall it being described (possibly by you in another thread) as having a unique and spicy, wood incense-like topping. I can see that here.
That's right, Mrs. Pickles. Some people describe RB Plug as especially incenselike. I never had it, so I can't say for sure.
I put it in my list of blends that some reviewers count as incenselike:

May I please ask how you would describe that quality? When I think of incense smells, I think of the lemony oily smell of frankincense or the pine sap smell of myrrh.

For St. Julien, the "incense" quality was a combination of woody, floral and powdery smells. Somewhere between the floral aspects of frankincense and powdery sandalwood.

I wish this stuff was still available. I thought it was reminiscent of RB plug - it had a similar gingerbread thing in my opinion. A bit dry, but I thought it had held up quite well!

Seeing the cut of this tobacco reminds me of an old Ogden’s St. Bruno advert that I saw on YouTube. I’m sure some of you saw it when it was actually on TV.

A guy goes fishing at what looks like a lake in Alaska and forgets his tobacco. Devastation. A dog comes up in a boat to deliver his beloved St. Bruno, all is well in the world, and his day of fishing is saved.

Obviously, this is not the cut of the current St. Bruno and looks much easier to pack and light. This Ogden’s St, Bruno looks much more like a shag cut that you would see from G&H.

Lots of blends were basically a shag cut in the past (finer than the modern G&H shag cuts, at least in the UK - more like RYO).

Sadly the law changed in the early 2000s so pipe tobacco had a minimum width of cut, basically to prevent people buying 'pipe tobacco' and using it as RYO.

Also, I loved that advert. There was a similar one in a polar research station.

That makes sense. It always surprises me how popular flakes are, considering the amount of futzing around required to smoke them. Super fine cuts are so awesome to smoke. I’m enjoying some G&H Kendal Mixed this very moment. Stuff and puff away! IMG_6795.jpeg

Dear Mrs. Pickles,
May I please ask if St Julien was one of the most incenselike blends that you have tried?

Prince Albert used Crimp Cut and doubled as RYO and pipe tobacco. I guess that Crimped is practically the same as Ribbon cut. American Spirit uses Ribbon cut too it seems to me, yet bills itself as RYO. I could be wrong and it could be using shag.
