I can't figure out how to get the following to display as a quote. Be assured it's a cut & paste, though. An email I received from Smokingpipes. (i.e. their words, not mine)

Mods, if doing this is a no-no, get mad at me, not Smokingpipes, OK?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last year, Peterson overhauled their sandblasting process from the ground up. Adopting a version of the setup used by artisan pipe makers, the marque now treats each sandblasted pipe individually, enabling their craftsmen to focus on each block of briar while still maintaining a continuous flow of production. We've already seen the exceptional results of this new process, namely in the 20th Anniversary pipes the marque made for us, but also in other lines such as the Arklow and Deluxe System sandblasted series.

Many of those initial blasts were so full of character that Peterson also began exploring a way of designating exceptional sandblasting beyond the current grading paradigm. They wanted a designation stamped on the pipes themselves to mark their status. The result is the new Premium Sandblast, or PSB grade.
While the Supreme is still the highest designation for Peterson's sandblasted pipes, the PSB stamp denotes sandblasted bowls of exceptional quality and character. Much like those 20th Anniversary pipes, they tend to be craggy and deep, evocative of old-school English or modern artisan sandblasts, and are most often accented with sterling silver, hand-applied by the team's talented smiths. Only a select few make the cut, however; since its inception in March, fewer than 1% of Peterson's regular production pipes have earned the designation. They are truly special pieces.

Given their rarity and excellence, PSB-graded sandblasts are currently exclusive to a few existing lines, such as the House Pipe and Sherlock Holmes series, which we're excited to share with you today. Among the 24 PSB-graded Peterson pipes in today's update, you'll find a variety of Sherlock Holmes shapes, including the iconic Original and Watson designs, as well as three examples of Peterson's XXL House Pipes — all banded with sterling silver and all deftly showcasing Peterson's new standard for the sandblasted pipe.

that's cool.. but odd to me that only the House pipe and Sherlock series have received this grade? Wouldn't there be random excellent sandblasts from all the other lines as well?

Very nice. I appreciate the efforts Laudisi is taking with Peterson, and I love Peterson's stout shapes. I own one that I really like. Now, if they would just overhaul their drilling process so that their bent pipes could pass a cleaner instead of turning into gurgle monsters halfway through a smoke, I'd buy another.

i suspect they grade the pipes first and then assign them to the House and Sherlock lines rather than select the lines and then attempt to fit in the prime pieces.

Half of 'em are crap. And they blasted so much, the shapes are off. I don't know what's going on, but the Sherlock Holmes series has been looking weird of late. Dark smooth, rusticated, and sandblasted are not exactly like they used to be. New Premium Sandblasted aren't helping.

Beautiful blasts they are too.

Thay're also switching back more and more to vulcanite stems, it seems.
SH pipes always had vulcanite.
the systems are all acrylic now.

half of the blasts I would not grade as "premium"... they look prune-like still.

You understand that that's EXACTLY why the first couple decades' of Dunhill Shell production are held in the highest esteem by collectors the world over, yes? The craggy "Mother Nature morphed shape" is one school of blasting's gold standard.

Try and buy one on eBay sometime for less than 1.5/2.0X what the shape usually sells for, and watch what happens.

Good for the Dunhill smokers. Don't really find them to my taste.

Don't really find them to my taste.

The world will vote with its wallet, of course.

Me? I like the time machine feel of what they're doing. The 20's and 30's era Shells were generally available in first 10-15 years of the Estate Era, but had been mostly Hoovered up by the late 90's.

Today, they bring a high price when they do become available, and hunting them in the wild is the only economical option. (the board's Beefeater33 has had notable success doing this)

Having a source for new pipes that push the same aesthetic buttons is a welcome development, imo.

Perhaps it's my imagination but I'm under the impression that the rusticated finish on Petersons have also become much better looking this past year. They used to have this (in my opinion) butt ugly symmetrical sort of diamond shaped rustication where as it now seems to be a lot more natural looking, organic and flowing.

But hey I'm still a novice so I may be talking out of my arse.

I agree that rustication has gotten better. That strange pattern they had before were rather puzzling.
