Spring 2015 Legislation

On April 28, 2015, Bill 90 passed third reading in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly to amend the Tobacco Access Act to ban the sale of most flavoured tobacco in the province.

The ban will include menthol, flavoured pipe tobacco, most flavoured cigars, flavoured papers, and flavoured tobacco that is not smoked, such as chewing tobacco and snuff.

Port, rum, wine and whiskey flavoured cigars that are 5g or more and $4 or more will be exempt through regulations.

E-cigarettes and e-juice will be exempt through regulations. We are urging the federal government to address quality and safety concerns by regulating these products nationally.

These changes will be effective May 31, 2015.

...and I just returned to pipe smoking a few months ago.

This will only encourage me to buy from the US. The province must understand that if we want to smoke, we will find a way. This ban will only feed foreign economies and illegal tobacco sales, I will have no part of the latter. The liberal socialist government want to make them selves look good to the public.

They have no idea what they are talking about. I didn't smoke flavored tobacco until I was well in my 20's. I started smoking cigarettes as a kid, not flavored tobacco. What good does banning a specific type of tobacco do? Where do they get these figures? Hypocrisy I say.

I'm surprised that they actually mention pipe tobacco. Alberta and Ontario have passed similar laws, but they both neglected to mention pipe tobacco.
Now the real question is how will they enforce it?

What is "flavor"? Are bergamot (in snus) and tonquin bean (in pipe tobacco) flavors? As usual, the bloody do-gooders do not know of what they legislate.

I realize this would include aromatics, but they use the term flavored loosely. It's open to interpretation. Latakia is not flavored in a traditional sense as aromatics or menthols, but it is smoked to add flavor. Seems they are wording the law to suit their agenda. As long as the children are safe I guess.

As for protecting "children", what is more enticing than forbidden fruit?

How many more laws are needed to protect children from tobacco? Is a store owner likely to sell a 6 year-old a tin of pipe tobacco? This is another example of low hanging fruit for legislators to claim they've done something this year.

Here in Ontario - it's expected to be the law by the fall - but it doesn't say anything about pipe tobacco - at least not that I could find and certainly not as specific as the Nova Scotia legislation. Now that means there is a ban to sell - but does that mean you won't be able to import it? My usual shipments state "Pipe Tobacco" on my customs forms - but it doesn't refer to it being "Flavoured" so I can see it still being able to get in the mail?

I've only been back to smoking a pipe for the past few months. 25 year break or so. I don't smoke it everyday. When I first started in the early 90s it was drug store aromatics. So when I got back into it I bought aromatics. Bought a few tins from 4noggins, only 1 of 3 was an aromatic. Now I'm favoring the non-aromatics. Orlik GS, Frog Morton Cellar. I just bought an assortment of 3 tins and only 1 is an aromatic. This might help me find my flavor. I have a feeling that I'm actually not an aromatic guy.
Perhaps this law will not effect me as I originally thought...

I think as adults, we should have the right to choose. Where I live, liquor is heavily taxed and look at the damage it can do. I think more kids abuse alcohol then tobacco. Why doesn't the government ban alcohol.

Every time I hear the govt. say "but it's for the safety of the children", watch out. They're getting ready to slide another one by you.

I remember riding in to work one morning and listening to the news on the radio, when I heard some official govt. mouth piece saying that "the children are at risk", and a few min. later "we need to rescue the children", I thought to myself "oh shit, somebody's getting ready to get zapped". It was the Waco incident in Texas.

All morning that's all I kept hearing, "the children this and the children that", and what a bunch of weirdos the Branch Davidians and David Koresh were. (they may have been, but...) They were softening us up, because they knew they were going to go in and wipe out whoever they were targeting.

Same with the Ruby Ridge incident. When the "officials" start with "it's for the children", you can bet your bottom dollar they are getting ready to eliminate something or somebody, change something for the worse, or want to pass a law that will restrict another liberty.

After all, who can disagree with trying to protect a child? I think they learned their propaganda techniques from the Germans during WW2. They, and every other group since then, that wants to change something to benefit their ideology, use the same techniques. Soften up public opinion, get it on their side, and then go in for the kill. It's part of a battle strategy. And they are, after all, at war with traditional American customs and lifestyles. I mean, they couldn't kick our asses with the old American mentality, so they're out to change that before they come for those who are left who disagree with them. Unfortunately they are using the same methods in Canada it seems. And New Zealand. Hell, it's been working for them, so why not? That's my opinion.

Agreed, I think our youth are abusing Alcohol and the Devil's Lettuce more so today than Tobacco, nothing is being done to help our children with this crisis except attempts to legalize the latter of the two. I have never heard of an accident where lives were claimed from the Driver smoking a pipe or cigarette. Lets face it guys, this world is going to Hell in a hand basket! Why can't they get off the Tobacco wagon, and focus their thoughts where they really matter. Thanks for letting me vent!

Seriously, what kids (under 18) use pipes and pipe tobacco as their entry to the so-called evil of tobacco usage? If a kid is smoking a pipe, he or she is not smoking tobacco in it. Cigarettes like Marlboros, menthols and so on are the entry to tobacco. No need for any government to legislate pipe tobacco.

I am sorry to hear this and only fear it will spread. Our leaders seem to feel they aren't doing their jobs unless they are passing new laws. Smokers of any type are an easy target. We aren't going to storm our capital buildings throw rocks at police.
Here in Oregon we are more worried our kids being exposed to tobacco than marijuana which seems to be everywhere now. Even one of my wife's bluegrass band members showed up with some fancy, German made pot vaping thing last night. And she's a school teacher 8O
(Oh, BTW, her vaping liquid was flavored)
