I have the answer, how about both? After the pipe has dried of course. This is a mid size Billiard style with tall bowl Meerschaum.

You can do either, they're actually pretty resilient. I used to just put all of my pipes in cardboard boxes and store them in a closet. Didn't harm them at all.
I have loads of meers with no cases, they go in the stands with all my briars. If I have a case it goes back in the case and the case goes in a stand. I’ve never seen any detrimental effects of keeping in either place.
