Hello everyone, I am a relative newcomer to pipe smoking - be smoking regularly for a little over a year now, sometimes a little more sometimes a little less. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone in my circle to ask this question to, so can't tell if I'm complaining about something quite normal.

Well, what I notice is that my nose is a bit mucousy in the first hours of the morning after an evening of piping. Most of the time it gets better quickly, sometimes it goes away completely, but other days it stays that way in a mild form throughout the day.

Does anyone know this?

I really enjoy the pipe smoking. Would like to know what I can do about it.
I don`t inhale, but retrohale occasionally
One idea is to incorporate gugeling water with saline into my daily hygiene, maybe that will improve things.

Oh and what I would like to add, it seems to happen with all tobaccos, although I feel it is more common with aromatics.

Is your body's natural immune system responding to something that is irritating your airways. Obtain kleenex, apply to noise, blow hard.

If I understand you correctly, that means I'm not experiencing anything unusual, but something common, which affects us all? (sry, don't know how to write in plain text ^^)

I've always cleared my nose in the morning. If it's worse since I've returned to the pipe it's marginal. I have noticed it being more moist though, which is fine because it's easier to clear. I retrohale, French inhale and run the chamber under my nose to sniff.

It's normal to have a few of these "problems" from smoking a pipe. For example, quite a few forum members use "Biotene" mouth wash to help when the mouth and tongue feel dried out from smoking. I do get the occasional dry mouth or tongue irritation, especially if alcohol is involved, as it affects the coating of the tongue and mouth.

The nicotine you are absorbing could be causing a bit of a runny nose. My advise is; if you are concerned, ask your physician. If it's not concerning, start a log and see if certain blends appear to be the cause. Then, if you are discomforted, shy away from those blends.

If you're retrohaling then you're inhaling.
Maybe not much. but it's impossible to retrohale without inhaling at least some smoke into the top of the lungs.
This is why people who retrohale appear not to be smoking. It's because the vast area of the lungs absorbs most of the smoke.

Some people get congested, some don’t. My uncle had to avoid aromatics, as they’d leave him a stuffy mess.
I don’t get that. Just genetics.
Try drinking water while you smoke, and a glass right after.

I get pretty bad sinus infections, in addition to having allergic rhinitis. My nasal passages do get pretty clogged up overnight after smoking heavily. A netti pot or the saline wash in both nostrils in the morning clears everything right up. When it’s bad - as it is right now with my sinuses - I just listen to my body and cut back or refrain from lighting up.

I am always stuffy the day after smoking pipes, thus I know I haven't fully recovered my senses until a few days later.

Only smoking a few times a week probably gives a different take on tobacco flavors when you approach every bowl with a rested palette. I assume the daily smokers will be much less sensitive to some things but pick up other flavors I would miss due to being overwhelmed by bolder flavors.

Usually blow my nose once or twice during smoke. Some moisture does come out. I do that along with dumping ashes and drying the draught. It gives "cleaner", "fresher" smoke. I thought everyone blow nose in the morning to clear out the nostrils. One of my old friend just grabs a leaf off tree in the morning to blow his nose.

For me, that's just part of this damnable allergy season. Fall is the only season when I experience this kind of thing with my smoking. Also, see that little guy in my picture? I'm allergic to him, and his brother, so that adds to the other allergies this time of year.
