Yes, Nording does this on this line of pipes, so that if you break or damage a stem, you can reorder another one, by just sending him (or the retailer) the number stamped on the pipe. Very few Nording pipes have a flush transition from shank to stem. Most of his stuff (as other Danish pipemakers also) looks like he just grabbed a random stem and stuck it on his pipes. But, he does have some older pipes from back when he dabbled with making them himself that have a nice transition, but these will cost a pretty penny.

Have 5 Nording pipes with total satisfaction. I think Nording does some of the best work with partial rustication. If I knew how to post pics, I'd show you my favorite 1 featuring that and you can see what I mean. :)

I have a 19 and a 20 that are both exceptionally beautiful. I had a couple of the hunter series before I instituted my "Pipes only come into the house, they don't leave it" policy and regretfully sold them. Still miss them.
Anyway, Nordings have always done right by me, so I recommend them.
