I have one of the full briar ones. It smokes “ok” but do have a bunch of the same problems mentioned above. It also has some of the same benefits that others have mentioned. It really reminds me of some of the gear that I was issued in the military, cheaply made, half ass uncomfortable to use, has some handy aspects but will for sure get the job donecray. Wouldn’t spend the money to buy one again though

Thank for your opinions. Compass sized like my Savinelli 109 but little longer and metal version has more weight, feeling more substantial.

109 gives me an hour or so of slow pleasant smoke doing better with ribbon cut than with flakes to avoid getting too hot.

Another option I wanted Nording Valhalla 302 carved- short and a little bigger bowl. Let see there are many options for small, inexpensive pipes for example Rossi piccolo or Butz choquin lines.
In this case, metal doesn't really equate with more solid/substantial. The metal in the Nordings is super light aluminium.

Then again, when it comes to pipes, light as a feather is preferred to solid feeling, specially if you're a clencher.

I've been eyeing the Valhalla line for quite some time, but the poor quality of the Compass I bought has made me hesitant on buying another Nording—and their vulcanite stems don't endear them to me either.

I dig Tankards for some reason.. not sure if it's the popeye look or what, but it's a simple, functional shape that sits easy, and is usually lightweight for clenching. Some of these kind of remind me of a simplified Dunhill Duke.
