The problem that I am having is that I am not tasting any tobacco going into my mouth.

Tobacco that blows back in my face smells, and sort of tastes indirectly great but what actually comes through the stem tastes like hot air.

For whatever reason I find it really easy retrohale. Even then, it still doesn’t taste like anything.

There’s nothing wrong with my taste buds. I taste all foods, sweets, fruits, vegetables just fine.

My pipes all smoke very cool. They never get hot. They never get gurgling.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

and it's amazing how many people say they smoke slow and easy and dry and then come back later to say that going slower, drier, and using a more gentle touch gives them more flavor. Too much moisture can literally water down certain blends. And I say less then slow smoking going with gentle slow pulls brings out more flavor. Barely draw the smoke if for nothing else then to give yourself an idea of what the real parameters of smoking "speed" actually are. The thing is it is worth a shot.

I've had this issue with my Hackert. In my case I was packing the bowl too tight. Using less tobacco allowed more airflow and solved the problem. However, I have not had this problem with any other pipe.
This! The only time I've ever experienced no taste is if the bowl is packed too tightly or tamped too much/hard and an obstruction occurs while smoking.

also how long have you been smoking? I strongly believe that for some blends it takes a while to actually really taste them. In fact almost every blend takes a while before it tastes like a slight variation on it's particular genre. The details seem to develop over time. And when I first started smoking a pipe the flavors seemed much more muted then they do now, even when I don't pay attention and mindlessly puff like I am laying down a smoke screen.

Been smoking cigars a long time. Pipes are relatively new for me. Maybe a couple of months.

Most of us start off with problems tasting the smoke, if not ALL of us. I suggest trying a latakia blend or a cigar blend, something with a more pronounced flavor than those. I was told that Virginias were for the more experienced smoker, back when I started. I was hardheaded and stuck with them anyways, not understanding why they were for the more experienced. But, eventually, we all dry them out beyond what we think is necessary and slow way down to where no one can see the smoke... and something clicks, and we "get it."

Stick with it, or don't... depends on how much you want this.
Good luck.

Have you had Covid recently?
A year ago. Haven’t had any problem since.
I had it last Dec/Jan. Taste and smell have been weird ever since. It's like it comes and goes or something. I definitely am not tasting tobaccos the way I should. Frankly, I'm smoking just for the nicotine now, and don't really care what I smoke. Useful, I suppose, for getting rid of odd open tins and crap. Cigars seem to taste the same...I think.
