Here is my take. There should be classifications of eating establishments. Those designated as a Family Eatery (Shoneys, Steak and Shake, fast-food places, pizza places) would prohibit smoking in their premises. Those listed as a Bar/Tavern (pubs, bars, perhaps Applebees and the like which has a bar) would allow smoking in their establishments. Others, such as off-road diners or any other sort should have the ability to determine whether they do or do not allow smoking.
Have a sign on the front door post that reads "This establishment allows the smoking of tobacco products". If if you don't like it, go to a cafe that will cater to your smokeless needs.

Not just the 'Politically correct A holes' but also the free market folks, who would say that every restaurant owner should have the right to choose.
I suspect that in 2014 a place would see a downturn in business if smoking came back. Restauranteers would've fought much harder for a repeal if the ban affected their bottom line.

But think of all the smokers who would gladly requent the establishment knowing that they could not only eat, but relax afterward with a pipe/cigar/cigarette at their table, instead of rushing off smoke outside.

Only 18% of Americans are tobacco users. I'd wager that a majority of Americans are happy there is a ban in restaurants, if there is one in their town. I can't see smoking bans ever getting repealed wholesale. I have hope that there will be exceptions carved out for tobacco stores and cigar bars where there aren't exceptions already, but I'm not optimistic. Popular opinion just isn't going that way, and it's hard to picture it ever doing so with only 18% of Americans being smokers. And remember, that number is dwindling year to year.

There is still the Freedom of Choice. Just be cause a Smoking Ban is repealed, or even amended, does not mean that every place will allow smoking. I am absolutely positive that most, at least 80% of the eateries will still post and enforce No Smoking in their establishment, as is their right.
However, those few that cater to a mostly-smoking crowd, such as bars, taverns, diners, and even certain fine-dining establishments, would not see much of a reduction in patronage. Some might even see an increase.

You should have seen how pissed off the employees were at Walmart when they took the smoke lounge away. We had to go out to the receiving area outside to smoke. No exceptions to the weather.

Here in Ontario anything designated a work place must be smoke free.

This includes work vehicles (There was a news article about this in the last 5 years, a truck driver got ticketed I think)
This would probably even extend to your own home if you are paying an electrician/plumber/painter for the time they are working.
Aside from "You can't tell me what to do" I can't see an argument against being considerate of the person who has no choice but to be there.

Unless you'd rather have them leave so that you can wait for another cable guy 2 weeks from now between 8am and 8pm.

+1 griffonwing, you don't like smoke, don't go into the place that allows it, want to smoke, don't go into a place that forbids it. What happened to logic, common sense & respecting everyone's rights. There are many places I won't go to because it ain't for me.

If I respect your rights shouldn't you respect mine?

escioe, love your city, one of my best friends/business associates lives there. People from Montana are wonderful, like Americans used to be everywhere 40 years ago.

It's mostly the principle of it. If what I do hurts no one, then why should I get told off for it? And I understand that we are all of different backgrounds and beliefs and opinions of course. Just expressing a bit of my own opinion that's all.
