Good luck, best wishes. I hope everything works out for you.

I haven't smoked a pipe in 5 months since my knee replacement. I'm still having issues...some discomfort and numbness in my foot. I'm not taking any chances. I'll get back to the pipe eventually.

Doctors will tell you to stop smoking regardless of whether tobacco has really anything to do with your illness.
After my aortic valve replacement and heart bypass surgery I stopped smoking for a while. Then I deemed that psychological effects of Nicotine withdrawal and abandoning the beloved pipe hobby (one of the few hobbies left available to me, when no hiking or other physical activities are possible anymore) bring me more immediate psychological damage than any possible remote consequences of smoking, which I may or may not to live up to either way. So I resumed pipe smoking in moderation and haven't noticed any adverse effects in the 4 years that have passed since that. I acknowledge the risks but the psychological advantages of my returning to the hobby are obvious to me.
I wish you all the best, whether you decide to smoke again or not!

Giving the tobacco a rest isn't all bad - just think how tremendous your favorite blends will taste when you can come back to them!
In the meantime, we can still garner some fulfillment from our pipes. Could be a good opportunity to do some deep cleaning or repair work.
God luck, and good speed!

This. ^^^ Everyone's mileage may vary, but I don't tell doctors/dentists that I smoke a pipe, especially since I smoke it so seldom anyway. I might have five or six pipes a month. Even if I had several daily I'd still not say anything. I absolutely fail to see how smoking a pipe and not inhaling can be damaging in any way. Added to that, the sense of calm it seems to bring most people can only do good in my estimation.

Good luck with your surgery!! Considering the stakes in play it is best to listen to your physician. He might be wrong, but the stakes are too high to call him on it.

Really sorry to hear about this concern, Bullet. I just prayed for you.

If you do go without smoking, even from now on, relish all the more the other good things in your life. Many non-smokers live very full lives and obsess over myriad other good things.

I won't advise you one way or the other. Although the establishment pretends that smoking correlates to every physical ailment under the sun, I won't throw the baby out with the bathwater -- for all that I know, smoking may correlate to some ailments, and if your research indicates that it may really correlate to yours, then living is better than smoking.

When I started chemo, I gave up smoking altogether. Later, I decided that in my particular case, total abstinece wasn't necessary, but that more moderation would at least alleviate any guilt in the case of recurrence. So I've settled into maybe 3 pipes a week. With 7 kids depending on me, I probably won't (usually) smoke more than that. And for me, that's plenty to scratch the itch.

Please keep us updated on your medical proceedings!

Just been to a brain surgeon. Might need bypass in the head. He wants me to stop smoking. Reading about nicotine, it could be one of the cause of blood restrictions. So, will be cutting down and stop for a bit. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. If no improvement, that just means they are wrong. Will pick right back up. Gotta go one way or the other.
I’d do the same for sure. All the best to you!
