From various other threads I have learned that pipe smoking is often prohibited even if cigars or cigarettes are not. Why is that?
Cigar lounges I can understand. They would not want cherry or vanilla ruining the stench of their fat cigars, but even smoking wagons on trains and smoking areas in restaurants and the like sometimes do or did not allow pipes.
Is there a reasonable explanation for this?

I guess I have never heard of this?

The "no pipes" thing goes way back. While the smell of cigs and cigars bother a lot of people, it's a familiar, predictable smell.

Pipe casings and toppings can be ANYTHING, though, and business owners who see their revenue dropping because some guy insists on smoking grape aniseed vanilla licorice mint chocolate fish oil surprise tend to get categorical about pipes.

I figured it might be something like that. Even latakia would be brutal I guess.

You hear a lot in reviews about how people like the "room note" of this or that blend. Truth is, people really don't.. I'd say people are more tolerant of cigarette smoke, but that's just in my experience.
really does depend on the tobacco. An aro can be much better than a cig.. straight virginias probably better also.
Others.. probably not. I'm sure dark fired and strong burley tobaccos reek to nonsmokers.

I'm sure you're right, that some are worse than others.. But even those goopy vanilla blends have heavy, thick pipe tobacco smell.

Maybe the pipe smoker happened to be a vegan pilot who was into crossfit who wouldn't shut up about himself....and they wanted to get rid of HIM.

How do you know if someone is vegan/into crossfit/ a pilot?

Don't worry, they'll tell you.

(Just kidding folks! But seriously, enough already.)
Says “akousticplyr”. ?

Here's an unlikely explanation that might have a glimmer of truth. You see, the population had been trained to accept cigarette and cigar smoke nearly everywhere. People in the military were given free cigarettes with their food. White tablecloth restaurants had ash trays on the tables. Not everyone smoked, and not everyone who smoked wanted a perpetual diet of other peoples' smoke. So when the decided minority of pipe smokers lit up their blends, which were so noticeable and distinctive, that just looked like a place a line had to be drawn. So sure, people were allowed to smoke almost everywhere except most churches and some hospitals. But pipes, no. No pipes. The line had to be drawn somewhere.
