One of you younger guys should start a thread with music that has been released in the last 12 months that you think is good, great, or awesome. But, it has to be very recent bands.

I, for one, would love to find new music. Unless of course you guys fill it with a bunch of screaming and metal guitar stuff.

Don’t tell us about it. Show us.
In my mid 40's I am probably one of the younger ones. I don't think that's a good idea though. It would be hijacked by too many people with no real constructive input other than to be obtuse. What style of music is it you are keen to expand your horizons on? I think bandcamp is a good website to discover new music on.

I think the main point is that most contemporary pop features severely diminished emphasis on harmony, melody and complexity as compared to what has come before.

There are still great musicians out there but they aren’t as often featured in the genre of contemporary pop. When a song with a 2 chords, no structure and a one note melody has 5 producers, 9 writers and a performance that gets processed to death it raises the question as to what the final product is.

Individual preferences aren’t a part of the discussion at hand. There is an audience for everything out there. Always will be.

In general music today is more simply consumed than it is actively listened to. What gets produced for popular consumption reflects that.

Succinct and to the point.

Slugbug
Mdou Moctar
Weyes Blood
King gizzard & the lizard wizard

All newer artists that have released records within the past 1-2 years that I thought were enjoyable in some way or another. I’m still in my 20s but only for the next couple of months haha.

I'm not sure I could get past the names. Steely Dan is about as outlandish a band name as I can cope with.

I'm not sure how the names are any more outlandish than names like lynyrd skynyrd, blue oyster cult, led zeppelin, meat puppets, metallica, steely dan, etc.

I was mostly just joking. But you gotta admit, those names just had to be commented on...except for Weyes Blood, that one's pretty tame.

But no...I really don't care what their names are. Well, except maybe King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard...I do kind of care about that one LOL.

Spelling… very enjoyable. Good synth and beats. Very POPy, ethereal.

Slugbug, ha ha, I see some influences for you, quirky.

Mdou Moctar
I love world music. I also like music in languages I don’t speak. Lots of creativity with these guys.

Weyes Blood is interestingly ethereal. All of these are very ethereal. Kinda makes me want to wrap up in a blanket and hide.

King Gizzard… I’ve heard these guys. Very Wilco… Ween… esque. Genre jumpers.

For a short period my stepson was bringing a bunch of Tame Impala, Pond type stuff for a while. A phase. Just over produced, no hard edges, like it was baby-proofed of all jagged edges, wrapped in cotton stuff. We we’re starting to worry that he may be using heroine, ha ha. Turned out his girlfriend was just weird.
Now he is more of a Black Keys, White Elephant guy.

I’ve been digging some Allah-Las lately. Great summertime spins. Mrs Cosmic and I also really like… Sofi Tukker… I know, I know… but they have a fun twist of phrase.

I’ve never really been a genre person. I even dig country, and lots of new bluegrass is really good. I just like good music… except most over played 80’s pop. Country rap is weird. But… thanks for the recommendations. I may not buy the vinyl, but worth a playlist.

I’ll have to put on some Skillet Lickers to rough my edges up a bit now. puffy

I figured I owed ya one. You’re batting 1.000 after showing me Dan Reeder. Basically became one of my favorite artists instantly. I liked one of his newer songs so much I uploaded an iPhone recorded YouTube cover like some dweeb.

One of my good friends showed me some Allah-Las a few years ago. Pretty good stuff. Count Bateman by Frog is an incredible album that came out in 2019. My wife and I certainly don’t agree on all things music but that’s one we can both enjoy which is nice.

Damn no Tape Impala? I really like Lonerism and Currents but not the newest record. The newest one sounds listless and too placid.

Country rap is absolutely hilarious man. I play basketball with some of the guys who live around me twice a week and we usually listen to music while we play. One time this song called “Don’t touch my truck” came on and I was laughing so hard I legitimately couldn’t play. I thought I was gonna pull my frickin abdomen from laughter haha.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizzard have definitely piqued my interest here and there , I know they have worked with Tame Impala another one somewhat in that vein that show promise.
