I have been smoking my tin of nightcap on and off for the past 3 months and it is just not the same. The overall quality of tobacco's, especially the virginias, lack in depth and flavor considersbly than any earlier versions, even the ones made pre 2025. I do notice also the perique isn't as present as before, and overall seems incredibly lacking. I tried elizabethan too, and was dissapointed as well. Comparing it from beyond (which is supposed to be a replica of an old nightcap jeremy smoked) is a night and day diference of quality.

Whats wrong? Has anyone noticed this incredible shift in quality? I do know what's been happening recently with all the mac baren blends being butchered, but I didnt expect a nose dive of one of my favorite latakia blends. I hope i just got a really bad tin, otherwise It was so unenjoyable ill have to find a replacment if this isn't just a fluke.

Considering it’s been made by STG since long before the recent kurfuffle, I doubt it’s a production issue (unless it was made in the facility that STG is shutting down to have everything in one factory and was already switched over, but I don’t think that’s happened yet), it’s more likely a change in the raw ingredients coming in.

Some stg production has a huge change after being open for a few months.

Try dumping the tin into a big bowl and stirring it up. I've had some stg tins that seemed to have the colors in their own area like a TV dinner

I'm curious if the Mac Baren factory tobaccos in current production are facing the same decline as well?
According to reviews I've seen of the current production Mac Baren blends (from JimInks and several others), even if they're still being made in the same factory by the same people (as production has not yet been shut down and moved to the newer STG factory), the MacB blends are already taking a nosedive. Compared to ones made even a few years ago, literally not a single Mac Baren blend has been reviewed as anywhere near as good.

That said, it's possible that the tins need a little time to rest before smoking to show their best potential, so perhaps a revisit in 6 months will reveal that we are worried over nothing... but it doesn't look good.

Hopefully you got a bad batch! Those blends (EMP and nightcap) are not my favorite but there is something very peculiar about EMP in particular that I just crave every now and then and nothing else will satisfy. Have you tried the Pease blends Chelsea morning and Quiet nights?
I hope so too. I did try G.L Pease quite nights a while back and found it too sweet and soft for my liking. I may try it again soon with Chelsea morning which I never tried. But sooner than later I'll look into different latakia blends.

I'll definetly give this one a try. Thanks for the suggestion!

So I jumped on the Nightcap bandwagon 2023 and it became my English, most powerful English with still a good Va sweetness, because it’s 50% lat 50% Va plus others,d’uhh. I bought some again last year and noticed a change, not worse but more blended together, less separate flavours, could be older stuff, but doubt it because it sells fast, probably batches.

Anyhow to make a long story short I switched to Gawith Commonwealth which is 50% lat, 50% Va to punish STG for their crimes, and it’s a very close match, virtually identical I’ve smoked both together. I never found the Perique that strong flavored in Nightcap except maybe for Nic. But if you do buy, jar it because their tins suck, mine was already compromised upon arrival.

I haven't smoked Nightcap in a while, and just gave my buddy the last 3-4 oz I had in a jar. It's from like 2017, so it has some nice age on it. His go to blend is Nightcap and he swears it tastes different since it's been labeled with the Peterson name. I explained to him it should be the same, but he smokes it all the time and has for years and he thinks it's changed. He hasn't been impressed with his recent tin, so I gave him the "good stuff" so he was very happy.

I still have multiple tins of EMP with the Dunhill label, so I haven't tried the Peterson labeled EMP, or Nightcap so I can't compare.

Can confirm. Gawith is the way.
