simenon . . .I surely don't think that pipe smoking is good for us, however. The back of my throat is raw from a lot of smoking in the past few days and boy it's not nice. It's impossible to say what the cumulative effects will be until they appear, though...
I am with you on that. If my mouth doesn’t feel right I back off. Sometimes I have to stop for several days.
Interestingly, on health, the Gallup organization did an extensive study and found it was not exercise, not health food, not genetics, but the number one factor to health was “prestige” as they labeled it. That was a very interesting finding.

By the way, when I read this, my first thought, "Where's the 'Homerun' button?" This was great.
lankfordjl I've smoked cigars, pipes, and used nasal snuff and never felt a nicotine rush. I know that some people are more tolerate of nicotine than others; maybe that's my case. Caffeine is another example of a plant alkaloid that people can have a tolerance too. I was raised on coffee...started drinking it at age 5; now coffee is just a warm drink for me and energy drinks are sodas.
In my educated opinion, pipe smoking (without intentional inhaling) in moderation is no more of a health hazard than any other activity. Overuse of anything leads to health problems: sugar, alcohol, salt, sitting ... ha even overuse of "healthy" activities like exercise, drinking water, eating vegetable, taking vitamins, etc. is dangerous to your health. Sounds simple but the problem is this...what amounts to "overuse" is an unknown for each individual. Health officials try to standardize "healthy" levels of everything, but everyone's genetics are different and each person's body responds different. Our current medical knowledge has not advanced enough to be able to tell you (as an individual) what is "best" for you. In my opinion, all that general "health guidelines" lead to is social engineering which is a whole other topic.

Very good post, lankford. I agree on almost all points.

(Except I am very different than you when it comes to both nicotine and caffeine!)

Most things are ok in moderation...well except a bullet to the face( never a good idea ) If your looking for a nic kick there are plenty of smokes to get you there. Every ones body reacts differently so one persons choice mite not work the same on you.

If you want a nicotine rush smoke a large bowl of 4noggins Button Bay. You don't have to inhale it for it to kick your butt.

Would MC Christmas Cheer 2011 be a high or low nicotine tobacco? (Virginia's in general?) I have smoked it three times and I get a head fuzziness,a high/rush feeling, and a pressure in the middle of my stomach? (I don't have this effect when I smoke Frog Morton Blends?!) Is this caused by nicotine? Stomach problem (acid reflux.etc?)? I was curious if any one encountered any of these symptoms or has any info/suggestions?? I am a new smoker to the pipe (smoked cigars for years..usually 1 daily) and still trying to learn how to pack,light,cadence..and basically smoke my pipe safely ;)

Progressively smoke small amounts of the strong blend until you are able to smoke a normal sized bowl.
Keep in mind that this is how one develops a nicotine addiction.
If one is a casual smoker, then by definition they should not have a high tolerance to nicotine. (Unless it is just a personal body chemistry thing)
Cigars on the whole are stronger than pipe tobacco in my experience but like everything else the devil is in the details. If you are used to smoking a mild cigar, then don't be surprised if a strong pipe tobacco puts you on your behind and vice versa...
