Hey folks,

I find that I don't respond too negatively to nicotine anymore, which is great. But one reaction I occasionally experience is more annoying than anything, and I'm curious if anyone else has this.

Do any of you get hiccups after smoking a while?

It doesn't happen to me all the time- presumably only with higher nicotine level blends. But when it does happen, it makes the smoking experience just frustrating.

Anyone else experience this?

Not personally, but I’ve seen many a brethren get the nic-ups. The best was a young tradie trying some dip for the first time. Poor bugger. Should have listened when we warned him.

For some reason Capstan Blue gives me hiccups, but no other blends I've tried do?

I have heard of this, but never experienced it. My nic tolerance is off the charts from decades of the cowboy killers, such that I like strong blends just for the relaxation effect.

never from a pipe but from oral tobaccos sometimes and super rarely from nasal snuff (which is more nic rich then people think, basically most efficent delivery system in terms of percentage of nic in the leaf that shows up in the blood). Oh and those really strong soviet cigs did that to me when iwas 16 after the third one. Yeah it is annoying and can last past the nicotine.

dude don't smoke revolvers no matter how antique they are. It can lead to acute lead poisoning, though it gives a new meaning to iron lung
lol, that actually reminds me of a superstitious ritual I used when weapons qualifying in the Army (and later in the Air Force Security Forces). It started as a joke, but I would take a big whiff of my magazine, act like I was discerning what the scent was imparting to me, then slam it in and qualify. I always did great when I did that, so it became like a pre-game superstition to me. Not far off from what you're alluding to as a joke, but I assume we know I meant Marlboros :)

I get hiccups from smoking sometimes.
It can either be from nicotine ovordose, simply smoking too much for too long. In this case, having a full stomach is helpful.
Or from the combination of nicotine and cold. In this case, a full stomach is not helpful. Many will recognize the scenario of having to step outside in the cold for a cigarette after a meal and getting the hiccups.
The solution in both cases is to stop smoking. Resume after however long it takes to be comfortable again.

I worked at an environmental biomedical research agency for decades. One of the many scientists I got to know did research on nicotine's activity in the brain. I wrote several science stories on this and its possible applications and significance. My take-home lesson, the research aside, was that it is an odd and puzzling chemical. I've never gotten hiccups from it. In fact, I have fairly low response to it. I can stop and start smoking strong burley blends with no withdrawal effects at all. My dad was a non-stop pipe smoker for much of his adult life. My mom loved to gesture with cigarettes for the drama, but never bought a pack that didn't go stale, so low was her need for it. So I guess I acquired my dad's enjoyment but my mom's lack of it being habit forming. And no hiccups.

My dad, who normally chewed “beech nut” used to get hiccups like crazy when he tried switching to a plug chew, which I think was called “applejack”? Then he tried another plug called “bull of the woods” and nearly fell out of the deer stand we we were sitting in, it was so strong… all of this was 40+ years ago when I was a kid

well if nothing else you'7e creating a conection to the piece as well as defusing tension. The thing people forget about prayer is it is just a communication between you and any aspect of god (everything is an aspect of god by virtue of creation) so to my mind of course it would have a benefical effect

there are genetic markers for different reactions to nicotine. That can pretty accuratly predict ones tendencies with tobacco. Like those people who only smoke when certain things are going on. I knew people that smoked like crazy during finals or when intoxicated or tgat guy that randomly has a pack.

A little chocolate or water will help.

More importantly, if it frustrates or annoys you, put the pipe down for a moment.

Smoking a pipe should be enjoyable and relaxing (or enjoyable and a way to imbibe nicotine). When it becomes unenjoyable or a chore, stop. The pipe will be there when you're ready again.
