That’s a terrible feeling, sorry it happened to you! I actually got so sick I threw up once about 15 years ago when I tried Samuel Gawith Black XX Twist for the first time. I was super excited to try my first rope tobacco, didn’t let it dry at all, cube cut it and let fly. It wouldn’t stay lit, so I puffed and puffed, really enjoying the flavor. It was delicious, figgy, leathery, naturally sweet and just tangy enough to be exciting. Then the room started spinning after 20minutes or so, so I stopped puffing. But the damage had been done and I crawled my way to bed, sweating and spinning, until I barfed and began feeling better. I was off that tobacco for 10 years.

Old Dublin also kicked me in the ass! I love MM965, so that makes no sense.

The worst was some SG Brown #4 rope. I smoke a large bowl before my wife and I embarked on painting our living room. I was suppose to be the cut in man. It was winter, in my workshop. I had to stand outside in the 20 degree weather for 15 minutes, which pulled me back from the brink. But, I was still pretty woozy on the ladder a half hour later. My wife was not pleased with the accuracy of my cut in work (we weren't painting the ceiling), I feigned being tired.

I had a delayed reaction the other day, which I've never experienced before. I hadn't had a pipe in about two weeks, so my tolerance tanked. Not thinking, I packed some aged Penzance in a large chambered Ben Wade freehand as my evening smoke and went to town on it. I felt a little woozy, which I chalked up to not smoking a pipe in two weeks. I felt totally fine for about 45 minutes until it all hit. I got dizzy, sweaty, and nauseous like you can't believe. I thought I was coming down with a virus, fast. I waited it out, and it passed as quickly as it came on.
The delayed reaction was weird to me. I've experienced nic overdose (never barfed), but never have I had it nearly an hour after putting down the pipe. So strange.

When I feel the spins coming on (War Horse Bar I'm looking at you) I grab some honey from the kitchen which seems to keep me upright.

Only had an overdose with E A Carey’s “Sliced Black Twist” boy that’s one hell of a smoke! I have not had a problem since.

I'm posting while enjoying a tall bowl of Tabac-Manil Semois, ample in the nicotine department, a non-aromatic typical of leaf I enjoy. However, lately I have rounded out my tobacco rotation with milder blends with little or no noticeable nicotine content, some aromatic and some not. I think there is a good flavorful array of very mild and mild blends and single leaf that could be enjoyed without fear of nicotine reactions, so if you are having trouble with that, you can still enjoy a pipe. One recent example I've tried is Spilman's Mixture; my first reaction was, yikes no flavor at all, but as I repeated this blend, I discovered it is pleasing if very soft spoken. So if you are having a passing problem with nic, or just feel you've aged out of the more robust blends, there is plenty for you to enjoy. Just go for those mild blends and find the ones that are flavorful for you.

I have to be envious of all the posts. I regularly smoke a 50/50 mix of Black Twist XX and ODF because it tastes good, but a hard nicotine hit is elusive. Haven't really experienced a major one since cigarettes.

I have had this experience, but not as bad as y'all described. Someone else says it gets bad enough that you don't know which end to aim at the toilet.

Have to agree with Duane. I enjoy that throat clenching/ heart racing nic hit, but haven't gotten it for years. I'm a sicko, but I miss it

I have never had that cigarette rush, heart palpitations, sweats, and that rush feeling, with any pipe tobacco. However, when I smoke a twist at night or large bowl of Dark Flake, I get a slowed heart rate, queasy stomach, a dizziness like I would get from a sleeping pill that I was forcing myself to stay awake on. I will just take a small bite of chocolate and a big glass of ice water and then crawl into bed. Then I sleep like a baby. This has been my routine since I have discovered pipes. The water ensures that I get up to pee in the morning, so that I don't oversleep, and it keeps me hydrated, offsetting any possible heart conditions (according to my doctor), and the chocolate just offsets any uncomfortableness with the nicotine. But, I used to have a big problem with insomnia. I have gone as long as five days without sleep in the past, just working around the clock at my workbench or strings of marathon book reading. I've always had a problem with this. In school, I used to have stacks of books all over my room where I had read a book every night and then went off to school. Then, when I would get to sleep, it was never good sleep. Then I took about every sleeping aid known to mankind. Some would make me sleep walk or sleep eat, and some just didn't work. But, since smoking strong blends before bed, I haven't had an issue at all. I get about 5 or 6 uninterrupted hours of sleep a night.
My Grandfather used to have this problem too. He built wooden boats as a hobby, and he would stay up all night every night and build some of the most exotic wooden motorboats, and then shower and go to his engineering job. Everyone kept telling him that it would decrease his lifespan, but he lived to be 92. I think he stayed alive just to spite everyone, ha ha.

The other night I smoked Brown Bogie for the first time. Fortunately I knew what to expect. I smoked after dinner and slowly sipped my pipe. I got through half a pipe and was feeling affected by the nicotine. I ate some dark chocolate and went to bed. The next night I smoked a whole bowl and survived. A full meal, being well hydrated and dark chocolate works best for me.

I remember this sensation from my (very) young cigar smoking days. Sometimes I get the early-warning symptoms if I puff too hard on GH&Co Dark Flake or GH&Co Brown Irish twist (my habitual after dinner blends), but all I do is rest the pipe for a while and remind myself to sip.
There is one blend, however, which completely floored me (as in kitchen floor lie down!) - The original Gallaher's Warhorse Bar, circa 1970. How those old codgers used to smoke it day in, day out I do not know!!

I actually barfed from a very strong, very large cigar. Now I know when the symptoms start creeping up and I have something sugary, and/or just stop whatever I'm smoking. I deliberately avoid high-nic blends, and those I really like I cut with something else or use a filter pipe.

I mean, smoking raises your blood pressure immediately. That's a fact. I have to believe that's why most people who quit smoking actually quit.
