Steve Books, our late departed blender here in Portland, OR, used to work with his bare hands. He'd say on his blending days that he didn't smoke that much because he'd get his nicotine through his hands.
I know a young St. James Parish perique tobacco farmer who ended up in the hospital for an overnight stay from handling the leaves without gloves all day. He's never made that mistake again!
after pulling suckers off my very small patch of plants I feel the need to wash my hands (or at least rub them on the back of my pants) the green leaf/plant is really sticky, and I bet working a field of it would be very buzzy without gloves.
Maybe we should all try out a tobacco suppository and see if we get a 'whiz' out of that - apparently it was a recommended cure for any type of stomach problems circa 1720. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'Put that in your pipe and smoke it'....
I could believe it. Have heard of people catching a buzz from handling other less legal substances....gloves and mask are always a good idea under these circumstances lol.
