I’ve only smoked as of recent Gawith’s Rum Flake and Windjammer, and neither had much in the way of rum going on.

I’m trying to find some really tasty strong rum blends/flakes...

What say everyone?

So far I was thinking to give Mac Barens Navy Flake a go, not sure if it’s strong rum...

hmm ?

Black Frigate and Salty Dogs, you’ve tried them?

The review on Salty Dogs, Jim mentioned it as a ‘Light Application’. I want heavy, serious rum... LOL Of course not disgustingly heavy, but really rich bold rum flavor.

I rarely smoke Latakia, don’t care much for it, not sure how present tasting it is in the Black Frigate, it did sound possibly decent on the reviews.

Thanks

P.S. If anyone has some rum blends/samples they can shoot my way, I will certainly pay to give some a try, don’t want anyone going out of their way.

I'd opt for Peterson Connoisseur's Choice. The fruit note competes decently with the rum note, but for me, doesn't supersede it.

Imagine sailing on a sea of rum, in a boat made out of vanilla bean husk, delivering a cache of cherimoyas to a tropical plantation, whilst being fed grapes and fanned with palm fronds by several scantily clad women...

It's a little like that, but before the hull ruptures, you discover the cherimoyas are radioactive, and you find out (the hard unfortunate way) that the women aren't really women. And then the pirates show up. ?

In other news, I hope I land that sales position at Peterson... ?

I guess I should of thrown in somewhere ‘Traditional Rum Blends’, not sure I want fruit with it in that Pete...

Oooh @Servant King Sales job at Pete’s, hope that goes well!

The Wilke’s I’ll have to investigate that.

Either Or on the flakes, just want a nice ole Grog Rum!

Maybe on another Gawith batch/drop the rum will be more pronounced, I’ll have to keep an eye out.

Is Latakia quite pronounced in Frigate? I’m not much into Lat...

p.s I have put rum in my own plugs, with home grown and/or whole leaf and have really enjoyed the smoke, but not really pulled a 'rum' flavour per se .
Are you using regular or spiced rum?

I would think spiced rum would add more to the flavor profile.

Also, what's your method for making plugs? I'm about to enter amateur hour with a noodle press and using blending tobacco.

It definitely has Latakia in it, but the orientals are more pronounced. I find it delicious and quite rummy without being overly heavy on the Latakia.

I was Googling around online and saw Jim mentioned this many years back, as members were talking about strong rum blends.

————————-
P&W #515, and P&W Rumcake have more (aged Jamaican) rum than any blends I know. Sutliff Barbados Plantation, and G&H Sweet Rum Twist (it has more rum than Rum Flake). So does G&H Rum Twist Unsliced Rope.

I think if you call John Brandt to discuss he can guide you through the Wilke and maybe even get a little more rum into your Rumcake, but I think you’d want to talk it through with him.

I used the dark Caruba rum, not spiced. I already get a pretty strong cinnamon hit off the leaf, that is enough spice for me.

Making plugs, I have a couple of methods, but with my 'fancy, shop made, solid oak' plug maker broken last year, I tried just putting a ziplog bag full of wet whole leaf in the wood bench vice, upside down with a bucket to catch the brown juice, giving it a quarter turn a few times over a few days and then pull it out. It left an impression on both the leaf and myself.
