I just bought this pipe. I’ve been trying to find one with Urushi and bamboo. Thank you!
It is unsmoked!Oh wow, I have been a contributor to PAD! LOL
I don’t know anything about the shop, I was just Googling around and found it is all.
I hope it turns out great, the site said it’s Unsmoked.
Let me know when you get it.
you may not have known it, but it had the combo I was looking for! Thank you!Oh wow, I have been a contributor to PAD! LOL

What Combo is that?
Urushi and bamboo Satou. Sometimes you find one or the other, but both are not as common from what I’ve seen.
I got this backwards. Tsuishu is the layered lacquer in the stem, Urushi is his unique finishing technique. Is the Urushi the color banding near the stem?
I had this backwards, I can’t keep it straight! Tsuishu is indeed the layered lacquer, Urushi is his finish. Sorry! Is the tsuishu the inlay in the stem? And did Satou often create pipes without bamboo shanks? I think all the ones I’ve seen so far except for this use bamboo.
Not Urushi, that is his finishing, I didn’t have one with TSUISHU.My current set of Satou pipes, they all smoke fabulous but I didn’t have one with UrushiView attachment 254141
See my last commentDo you know if he used wood to paint Tsuishu lacquer on, or it’s just hardened layers of different colored Tsuishu lacquer?
Ok Urushi is the lacquer finish on the bowl.
Gorgeous! Is the notch in the third photo there to line up with the notch in the bamboo? And what is is that we’re seeing in the notch, is it just the stem or part of a reverse tenon?
It’s to line up, yes, it is just the stemGorgeous! Is the notch in the third photo there to line up with the notch in the bamboo? And what is is that we’re seeing in the notch, is it just the stem or part of a reverse tenon?
So Brian L explained to me that Tsuishu is created with layers of Urushi. Urushi is also the special finish on Satou pipes that takes several coats spanning several days. The Tsuishu is old stock that his father made.
I’m no expert, just know how it was explained to me.Lots of Japanese sites explaining.
After further reading the color bands should be carved Urushi and Tsuishu lacquer.
Tsuishu, my understanding is called this when it’s a red color lacquer, and if it’s not red, it’s called Urushi.
My understanding is Tsuishi means Red Lacquer.
