Well having a blast but now 2 months in I have about 40 tobacco samples where half were given by some fellow forum members and I purchased other 1oz bulk, match, and codgers myself. I have tried about 12 of them and like 5 of them.

So how do I find the time to enjoy the ones I like AND try others? It’s a nice problem to have but challenging. I am averaging about 3 smokes ever 2 days depending on life and weather.

Curious if anyone has ever had a pipe marathon where you spent the weekends trialing 10 samples? I am thinking of trying to do 5 a day Saturday and Sunday. Am I flirting with a bad idea?

You might experience some tasting fatigue, or even some nausea if you reach your nicotine limit. I'd recommend starting the day with a nice satisfying blend you really like, and then later on maybe after a meal and some palate reset, you try a new blend. Take your time, enjoy the journey. :)

If you can get to two pipes a day, smoke the first pipe as one of your favorites and the second pipe as one of the samples. As noted before, don't put unnecessary stress on yourself to try all the tobacco you have purchased. They will be there when you get to them. Eventually you will come to another problem of having so many "favorites" and not having time to smoke them. Just enjoy the journey.

Good idea on the morning EMP and an evening new sample. Like it.

Patience! There is no rule for how long, or in what order, you will respond to the flavor of a tobacco. In one case, the first bowl was, "That's amazing." Then the next few bowls were gradually less and less satisfying. Then I hit a "is this the one I liked before?" point. Then it got better and better. The tenth bowl (over several weeks!) was just wonderful, even better than the first. Now it is consistently satisfying. How can that be? I have no explanation. But I suspect this is a common occurrence.
So don’t always expect that tobaccos you dislike at first, you will always dislike them. And don’t expect that tobaccos that taste "meh," won’t ever taste wonderful. It just takes time and patience. ? But do expect that over time your palate will make sense of all this, and gradually you will know what you enjoy, and you will enjoy it very much ?

I started by keeping a rotation of a bout three of for, and tried to make each one a different type of blend (one English, one Virginia Kentucky etc), and then swap them all out for alternatives at the end of the month. If there was one I was unhappy to see go, it stayed in (some I swapped out sooner).

Generally, this let me give each blend a fair shake, and also gave me a sense of which ones I looked forward to the most, and also the ones I'd look at and think 'I really don't want to smoke this one today...' I think I've now found about 8 blends I more or less happy with, and don't really care to experiment much more for now.

Yo Old - situation is similar to a pipe show, or pipe club meeting. Start the day with lighter blends, amping up as you go. TR is a great resource to figure out the sequence. And Biotene is your friend if you overdo.

I've been at this for 4 years and I figure I'm about 1/5 the way through just the Burleys that interest me.

Like other have said, there's no need to rush. As you find a blend you like, buy some to put away.

BTW, If I tried to smoke 5 bowls in 1 day it would take me 90 minutes per so 7 straight hours. I would either be burned out, dizzy, nauseous or all three! puffy

Not at the level you are talking about, you might just overwhelm your tastes.

It’s usually recommend to only go through a few blends at a time, to give yourself a chance to really experience them, especially if they have a very rich/immense profile with a lot going on, that you might miss, by piling to much sampling going on.

As typically said; take the time to get to know a blend.

I like the 2 ideas of morning for my favs and evenings for a new sample, and having a favorite of each type (Burley, Va, English, etc) and every month try a new blend in those categories but I haven’t found those yet. Sounds like the best advice is don’t marathon it or over smoke. I will find my balance but I am also not waiting a year to try Plum Pudding or Orlik Golden Flake. Just gotta find the time but with a cleansed palate.

No marathons for me. Just give it time. Ive tried many many blends and have gravitated to the blends I enjoy. Took a couple of years but looking back it was worth it. Gave/tossed a lot of tobacco away to get here though. I enjoy Latakia dominant blends.
