This is a pretty big forum and has a lot of good advice dispersed throughout. Read other threads and posts and you'll learn a lot.

Just going to go this method. Seems simple and I have these tobaccos and other burley’s. I am sure honey was not used 100 years ago so no need to do it now.

Try like this...

You need to dry tabac! ;)

1. Dry tabac out, give a pinch between index and thumb, should feel little to no moisture, tabac barely clumps together, or not at all. It doesn’t have to be crispy, but some like it crispy too, experiment...

2. Gravity fill the chamber, dropping a little pinch at a time inside, and tapping the the pipe to help settle each pinch you drop in.

3. When reaching the top of the chamber, don’t pack the tabac in with a tamper, or pressing a finger down inside the chamber. Slide your thumb across the chamber, pressing with only the heal of the thumb going inside the chamber slightly. This is like Frank’s method, except he places a tin of tabac over the chamber and moves it around.

4. After filling the chamber, if you feel a need to pack slightly, let the heal of your thumb rest inside the chamber and twist the pipe 1/4 or 1/2 way around spinning the tabac, which will pack it slightly.

5. Light the tabac, after it’s charred you can then use a tamper to pack, but only allow it’s weight to press the tabac down.

When you smoke, sip slowly too... :)

I too am sensitive to tongue bite and not just my tongue it tears my whole mouth apart - cheeks, tongue, palate. For me it seems to really get me if I have to relight a lot. I have not been bitten for the first half of any bowl but then midway through I always have to relight - I am still learning packing. Once it goes out if I am not really ginger with the flame on relight I will get bitten almost every time unless I am smoking straight black cav. I am tempted to just smoke half bowls but I really enjoy how the flavor can change from top to bottom. Early on I was puffing too hard and now I have tried different cadences and the "breath" method which I hate btw. So now I just take small puffs, just enough to keep the bowl slightly warm to the touch, and no bite until I have to relight. I'm gonna get there and I think after a few months now I have made some major progress.

Tongue bite can be brutal. Give your mouth a day or two off. Virginias are notorious for tongue. The only real cures are to pack you pipe less tightly and smoke it a hell of a lot slower.

Little things add up to much when I'm smoking. The Peterson stays lit longer. Not touching the tobacco with the flame, a gentle tamp, and sipping seems to have eliminated the bite for me.

Since I do the same with everyone pipe, there are pipes that just don't stay lit. Sorta of frustrating because otherwise I like the pipe.

You nailed it. I tried to smoke the next day, and the next, but it just was not there. I am taking a few days off.

And be sure to dry, or dry it more, you forgot that one... LOL ?

The drier the better for people sensitive to VAs... ;)
