Ok I finished my first month as a pipe smoker. I learned a lot, but mostly to just slow slow slow the heck down.
I have not tried as many tobaccos as I thought I would have by now, but that goes with slow slow slow the heck down.

This morning I think I found one of my first tobaccos that I would enjoy smoking daily. MATCH Carter Hall.

I don’t know who makes it but I bought it from P&T. The real Carter Hall is hard to find and on backorder, but I will keep trying to get some. At least I enjoy the lower cost copy.

My 3 favorite so far are Carter Hall, Captain Black Original, and Super Value Black Cavendish.

I'm in the same boat. Got about 5 different blends. Ilene's Dream and Plum pudding are my preferred so far. Just got the pudding. Only tried it once. I like playing with the flake. Don't really have a favorite that I WANT to smoke. I want to try a stand alone Burley and stand alone Virginia so I can become more discerning on the blends. I truly haven't given what I have a good enough try yet. Multiple Boswells, Maltese Falcon, and new addition plum pudding. I'm getting confused because they taste different in different pipes. I also have regular captain black and its pretty good.

I only have cob pipes so I am going to wait on heavy Virginia until I get a briar and have better cadence and skill. I am normally a semi-hyper person and probably would bite myself more than not. For me I will try my aromatics and slip in some very mild English until I get my Briar’s going. I am a simple person ready to buy an estate set of Grabows or cheap briars but my wife is moderately germaphobic (a real disorder - arggg). She absolutely refuses me to put a pipe in my mouth that others have smoked. All this does is slows me down because I probably can only afford $100 a year for pipes. So my cobs are my friend. I like them.

Oh facts are irrelevant to a person with a phobia. She is very conservative person and is anti mandate, etc. but just has strange rule sets for certain things. I have learned it’s easier to just let her have her peeves. In some ways it will allow me to pressure her for some new pipes. ?
So, I read threads here where the wives dictate. I suppose if you're happy with the arrangement, that's all that's important, but I've always questioned these 60-70 year marriages. If two people can exist that long, someone is not being themselves. YMMV.

You might ask her if she uses the plates and silverware from restaurants. Seriously, I understand. I have a wife too. I would LOVE a smoking room. To me the pipe goes in my mouth once a day for 30+ minutes while I contemplate the universe from my lounge chair. Unfortunately I have to do this on the patio in the cold. She just doesn't get it ... . BTW, I love cobbs. They're great. They aren't lesser. Lots of new $50 pipes out there. Best of luck

Carter Hill in the 14oz tub is at SPC.

When you mentioned $100 for pipes, you should seriously check out Genod, which is one name that is not brought up much, unfortunately.

You can buy directly from him in France too, the site is in French, be sure to use a browser like Chrome to translate.

SPC also sells Genod.

SmokersHaven has a few at $80

I’ve had my eyes on them for a while, still trying to decide. It’s my understanding for the money, they are a better pipe, then another brand at the same price. Other name brands of similar quality would sell for more.

If interested, read up on Saint Claude, considered the pipe capital of the world, that’s the roots of Genod.

I wouldn't wait on Virginia based on smoking cobs. I personally LOVE a straight Virginia flake in a cob, they seem to work great together for my tastes.

Take your time. You're doing fine. Yes, I second the recommendation on Genod, a good French pipe. SP has a nice one, a bent billiard, for only $50, a good deal. Also, Kaywoodie are good, though the supply is intermittent; their Saxon series is about $42, a price far below its quality level. I find them at West Virginia Smoke Shop's site, when they are in stock. You can have quality pipe smoking a low prices if you shop carefully.

what is SP?

So far I am looking at below for pipes. No particular order but under $150 is my focus. I am thinking i would rather have 3 $50 pipes, or 2 $75 pipes, instead of a single $120-$150 pipe. How did most of you go initially?

Probably SP = Smoking Pipes, I say SPC, c for the .com

If you are in no hurry to buy/need a pipe, take a few months, reading here, and online.

Because seriously, there is a massive amount of pipes out there in the world.

Also, even between lower priced pipes, sometimes, there are ones much better for the price, this is why I brought up Genod.

With a good woman it doesn't matter if she controls everything. ?
