Dry your tobacco more than you think you need to.

Pack it looser than you think you need to.

Smoke it slower than you think you need to.

Tamp it less , and more lightly, than you think you need to.

Clean your pipes after every smoke, using pipe spirits of some sort.

Don’t worry if you have a few relights.
I think those six lines have the solutions to 95% of the problems a beginner might have. The other 5% would probably involve a poorly engineered or poorly executed pipe.

Generally I think I tend to pack fairly loose, figuring that without air, nothing will burn. I still find it going out frequently. Hopefully the weather will cooperate again soon and I can get out for a smoke and try again.
I'm fine with a few relights, but this whole 5-10 times thing is kind of annoying.
