You will need more than one pipe. I suggest that you buy a MM cob with a forever stem such as a Carolina Gentleman and a pipe by Rossi, Savinelli, Brebbia or one of the other mid-priced good makers. I love Castellos but I wouldn't suggest buying one until you discover if this something you really like. There is a reasonably steep learning curve to this and a Castello is a big upfront expense. I always suggest to new pipe smokers that they buy either new or estate Radice rind pipe. You will get a great handmade pipe at a very reasonable price and it will be building block for your future rotation.

I really like Butz-Choquin pipes. I own quite a few. The are inexpensive, and all mine have smoked fantastic. If someone asked me what a great first briar pipe BC would be my answer.

Have you ever tried smoking a pipe before? Some folks are suggesting a pipe which might make for a nice 10th pipe or something, but for your first, maybe go for a bucket pipe. I mean, you don't even know if you're going to like this. It is harder than any other form of tobacco consumption. Get something that you won't mind burning out or scorching the rim as you develop some skills in all of this. Hell, I watched a guy buy a $500 pipe, smoke it, and then just snapped the tenon with his big meaty hands, because he was an uncoordinated goon.

Yeah this true...

I think im starting to see everybody’s point, better to start with ford taurus than a maserati for a first drive. Might try something a lil more economical to pop my cherry with ;)?

My first pipe was a tiny off Savinelli seconds made to be a bucket type pipe, called Piuma. It was $30ish. I smoked the hell out of it, still smoke it. In the beginning (and remember I told you this) you aren't going to be able to taste the smoke like we all discuss. It takes time. You either have to stick with it, or move on. And, keep in mind that many men on here openly admit that they still can't taste anything after years.
So then, why waste money on a pipe at this point in your smoking, on something that won't matter. You're not going to pick up on delicate nuances of this or that. At this point, you probably don't even know what tobacco you prefer.

I suggest buying the cheapest pipe at the nearest tobacconist. Get a couple of oz of a couple of English blends, and maybe a couple of aromatics. Scorch the hell out of you mouthy (like we all did) and either toss them in a drawer for forever (like 90% of people who try pipes) or plow through till you get where you want to be with this hobby.

If it were easy, it wouldn't be a hobby on the verge of dying out, in this day and age of only making easy choices. If in a few months you stuck with it, then you had the True Grit all along.

I'm not going to blow roses and rainbows up your ass. It's not an easy hobby, especially if you didn't grow up around pipesmokers. But, if you're still here in a few, then we will celebrate and talk about getting you a real pipe.
